Sharon's Story
Started working as a dental assistant after graduation. Married Craig Yaws (class of '68) in 1971. Went to Germany complements of Uncle Sam. After we came back to the states, I worked as a dental assistant in the 'dorf, circulation at the Times, first baby, Home Interiors, moved to Alabama, second baby, moved to Oklahoma, third baby, moved to Texas...no more babies! After Texas we moved to Colorado and stayed here. Craig was in traffic signals (Eagle Signal) as a Sales Engineer, hence the moves. Should have stayed in the army, lot less moves. In his time in traffic here in Colorado, he designed and engineered the traffic system for the Denver Light Rail Project, among other things. I actually wired some of the control cabinets! After that experience, I opened a flower shop which I had for 23 years. I was blessed with a great, loyal customer base so there was lots of hard work. I became known as the florist to go to when you wanted something out of the ordinary. Got to do some really neat stuff and some really weird stuff. The old funeral director in town was into the bottle and drugs, so I didn't know what I'd find when I delivered flowers. There was more than one occasion that I had to help casket the body for a service. My advice in that area....know exactly what you want when the time comes and have it in writing in your fist when you die. I wanted to go into nursing in high school but after working with the various funeral homes in this area, I realized that doing the last tribute to someone and being there for the family meant so much. Doing the unexpected and something very personal and different for a sad time was very fufilling The sad part of the industry is that people are becoming used to grocery store flowers and don't realize that the little shop on the corner has the best stuff. We are a dying breed and it's sad to see. Anyway, being so busy was very hard on the body and after back surgery, and various other repairs, I decided to close the shop last year. I was retired for a whole six months when my old landlord needed office help. Now I work for him in an insurance agency and get to use my mind and still see all of my old customers. Still do weddings and funerals but not the every day flower stuff.
Kids are all boys, Christopher owns his own tattoo studio, Mantra Tattoo in Denver (check them out on the web) and has twin boys, Chase and Cannon, and a great wife, Jen. Both are award winning artists and their studio was voted #1 in Denver after only eight months in business. If you want some ink, it's worth the drive. Carrick went to USAFA and married Keri. He is now a Captain in the Air Force, up for Major and flies C-130's. Currently he is an IP at NAS Corpus Christi. His first duty was Anchorage and he's up for rotation in Sept. and has put in for that again. Keri was stricken with MS on the move to Alaska and they have a very full plate (and three labs!). Our youngest. Clint, is married to Stefanie and is a sculptor with Ricker Designs (check out artwanted.com search...Expand for more
under artists for Yaws). All the boys are artists, Carrick designed the class crest for the class of 2000 at the Academy and does small sculpting (cake tops and such). Clint does everything from water color to bronzes, and anything in between. He and Stef have one son, Cooper and a brand new baby girl,Samantha.
Chris does huge murals and very modern art in oils, as well as the tattoos.
Craig doesn't do traffic anymore, he went Postal. Totally different job but no traveling or moving! He maintains the computerized sorting machines at the Denver General Mail Facility. Doesn't have to wear a suit to work every day and wine and dine the customers, but he does get to come home every night and isn't out running the roads. When I had the shop, he also tried his hand at being a dj and we have a pretty extensive music collection. We played for dance clubs, weddings, parties and stuff like that. He makes a good music man too, so maybe he can get a job at a radio station after he retires from the PO! Music has always been a big part of my life, from the back of the band in the drum section, drum and bugle corps, to helping Craig. Name that tune, I can find it for you!
I try to get back to Bettendorf as much as possible because the folks aren't getting any younger. My mail carrier here is from PV (Doherty, '71) so we share rides and laughs. It's amazing how many times our paths crossed (remember Pepe Taco?) and then we both ended up in Colorado. Every time I go home, I look so hard at people's faces to see if it's someone out of my past. I really do miss all the great people I grew up with. If you went to Stinkin' Lincoln, and see some goofy old lady looking at you, wave, you may know her.
My youngest brother, Scot has a son, Scot Also, that has a great band that plays in the area. They were voted best local band in the Times survey a couple of years ago. Name of the band is "One Night Standards" and you can find them on the web. The few times that I've been able to see them, they really put on a show! Check them out if you live in the area.
I would love to move back to the midwest to retire but the Texan I married has other ideas. I don't know where we will end up but I don't think it will be here forever. Too many people, not enough water and I don't want to deal with that situation much longer. However, Alaska looked pretty good, so you never know.
My life certainly didn't go the way I had planned after graduation. I'm sad about some of it, glad for some of it and all of it makes the me of today. I know that if I had stayed in Bettendorf, I wouldn't be who I am today, but that growing up in Bettendorf gave me the foundation to do what ever I want to do.
If you're in the area, look us up, we're in the book.
The door is always open and if you can get past the four cockers and one lab, hey, come on in and make yourself a drink. We'll be there shortly!
Looking forward to seeing y'all at our reunions. And if you live in the QC, please don't blow them off, it's YOU that we came home to see!!
