Sharon's Story
Life
Born Santa Barbara, CA,1941 at Cottage Hospital.
Then Harding School at the age of 4 in kindergarten to 6th grade 1952,
La Cumbre Jr Hi 1952-1955,
Santa Barbara High School-only 2 months, Sept 1955 & Oct. 1955
moved to San Diego, CA for 3 mos. Oct, Nov Dec 1955 & went to Point Loma High School,
then to Phx, AZ December 1955
to West Phx High January 1956-58 Graduated in 1958
Graduated Phoenix Junior College 1960, with Associate Degree
Graduated AZ State University w BA Primary Ed. summer 1962 registered as 1963 graduate because I finished in the summer.
Taught Madison school district,
Richard C Simis School in Phx kindergarten 1962-65
Was also sent to Madison Number One School to teach kindergarten and Madison Simis kdg students were bussed to me 1964-65 (overload at Simis)

Taught Davidson School- first grade- in Tucson, AZ 65-66 while Jim went to U of A.
Son, Jim, born Dec.1966 in Phoenix. Stayed at home from 1966 to 1968. Substitute taught Madison district Sept 68-Feb 69
Taught Feb 1969-May 1969 Madison Simis School -took over a 2nd grade class for a NBA basketball player's wife, Barbara VanArsdale (Dick) who was pregnant with their first child.
While there, a new innovative school was being built. I was hired to design, plan and teach first grade at the kindergarten to second grade school.
Opened that new Madison Heights School in Sept 1969 - Taught first grade with a team of 4 teachers made up of two 1st grades with two 2nd grades. Only 16 teachers in the entire school. They added 3rd & 4th grades later on. Taught there until May 1978.
Divorced in 1972
Transferred back to Madison Simis School-1978 taught 1st grade until retirement age 55 on Feb. 14,1997 (Valentine's Day is my favorite day of the year and it happened to fall...Expand for more

Only child, son, Jim, works at AZ Western College in Yuma, AZ He broadcasts and sets up information to and for the media for all sports teams at the college. He broadcasts on the radio station, the internet and cable TV for all of their women's and men's football and basketball games He was the Sports Anchor, News Director and News Anchor for the NBC TV station for 9 yrs. He, then, worked for two professional baseball teams as play-by-play, radio/internet, and media director doing the junior college part time without pay. They made the position that he has now as a paid job and career. I am a very proud mom of one child who has become very successful. His incredible wife, Alison McLallen Howell, grew up in Riverside, CA and in Yuma, AZ and she also works at AWC as the entire school's communications, publicity and media coordinator. They met at the NBC TV station. Married Nov 99.
I became a grandmother to Trevar James Howell in Oct 2002. My photos show my tiny family.
My brother, Bob Austin, was one year ahead of me in school. He has lived in Fremont, CA for many years.
I only have two nieces, my former sister in law who is more like a sister to me, two cousins and their families, who all live in the San Diego area.
Parents deceased- Mom.. Dec. of 1994 Dad.. Dec 1999 They are buried in the beautiful Santa Barbara cemetary. My dream is to go back to Santa Barbara just to see it now as I have only been back for 2 day trips to bury them. Nothing has ever compared with living in Santa Barbara but California is too expensive for a retired teacher from AZ on a slim pension.
Life is such an unexpected adventure!
