Sharon's Story
Life
My life...I went to Lee, CHJH in 7th grade but after being caught & expelled for playing hookey with Naomi Rice, Mary Blurton, Carol Estep & others & our folks & truent officers were out looking for us all day. We were allowed to finish that year at CHJH but expelled for the next year...I then went to Jackson JH & loved it!
I married in 1956 & moved to CA at the end of my Junior year, living in San Diego & Escondido, (my husband was in the Navy/Air force), then moved to San Bruno & Mountain View, CA for three years. I had baby girls in 1957, 1958, 1959, & 1974. My girls each have a son, & my oldest grandson helped give me a Great-Granddaughter Zoe in 2002. I finally graduated from CHHS in 1962 with my three daughters attending. I took Correspondence Courses from OU, night classes at Central HS & CHJH.
I started working for my folks in their commercial laundry (DeLuxe Laundry at 1913 Exchanger, OKC) when I was 12. The folks had to keep a close eye on me so I wouldn't have too much fun. My first outside job started 1960-1963 Harmon Construction Co, General Contractors OKC, secretary/receptionist; 1963-1964 typist for Dunn & Bradstreet, OKC; 1964-1965 Secretary for National Aviation Underwriters, National Aircraft Title Search & AirBanc of America, located upstairs in the old Will Rogers Airport; 1965-1966 Title Searcher for Aircraft/Pilot License/Hours for Aviation Information Service at FAA; 1969-1978, after my Dad died, I purchased & operated the folkÂs laundry. 1978-1982 Secretary at Comfort Distributors, Heat & Air distributors, OKC; 1982-1983 Carlson Systems, Shipping Material distributors, OKC.
Retired from The Hertz Corp 1/5/6 after 22.5 years, where I started as Lead Typist then Lead Word Processor & the last 17 years I was in Operations Training & Communications where Computer Based Training and Training Videos are created for Hertz Airport Rental Counters & Hertz Local Edition staff for car rental, cleaning, safety, System Releases,...Expand for more
Worldwide Field Bulletins, just to mention a few tasks the Training department does for our Training & Communications Managers, located throughout the US, CN, Puerto Rico so they can train Hertz thousands of employees. I was Training Materials Coordinator until we automated my position, then I was secretary for our Senior Director. I watched the machines automate jobs like crazy through the years. It was like magic! I think computers are here to stay. I took all kinds of computer classes. Hertz paid for our college courses until they started leasing over 700 computer-based training courses for us to take on line, available for home training as well.
My greatest time at school was lunch and going home time! I wasn't that bright, however, I did manage to make the honor roll in my Sophmore year, I played hookey most of the time in my Junior year. I ran around most with my next door neighbor, Barbara Snodgress, who graduated CHHS in 1954. I've been into computers every
since I heard the word. I started reading sales materials on them before PC times, not knowing what I was reading about but I just kept reading. In my department at Hertz everyone but me had a degree & most of them were Masters. Any help I needed, I had the best of teachers to help me. We were one fun family! I enjoyed going to work every day. I used to tell them I felt ashamed to take money from Hertz when I was having such a good time!
My favorite vacation was in 1977, 3-days in NYC staying at the Carlisle, half block from Central Park, waiting for the Queen Elizabeth II to dock so it could take me to Cherbourg, France to start my 32-day tour of 11 countries in Europe (all by myself), visiting France, Monaco, Italy, Vatican City, Liechenstein, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, and England. Actually there were 13 of us on the QE-II tour who met in Paris, plus our Tour Guide who spoke 5 languages & our Bus Driver. We all had a ball & I met some very interesting people.
