Sharon's Story
How do you tell 20-odd years worth of stuff in a few words? And if you remember, I'm not a person of few words! That hasn't changed!
After graduation, I stayed in Lakeland, got a job at Lakeland Rubber Stamp Co., over by Lake Morton.
I dated, partied, enjoyed myself, then met and married my husband in 1988. We had a daughter in '92, went to the 10 yr. reunion in '93. It was a blast. I brag still about how much fun it was.
After my husband became disabled in 2000, we visited his father's hometown of Leoma, Tennessee.
We decided a move to the country might be beneficial for us so we moved in 2001. By then I had been at the rubber stamp store 18 years and since I had never lived anywhere but Lakeland and because I had never left town to go to college, moving like this was the bravest...Expand for more
thing I had ever done. We were still settling in by our 20th reunion and it wasn't a good time to go back to Florida so I've always regreted that I missed that one.
Our daughter is 16 and attends one of the 3 high schools in the county. Polk County is what? Over 550,000 people now? We have about 40,000 in the whole county and it is indeed a rural area. We enjoy it but you really have to know what you're in for when you make a change like this. Lakeland had so much more to offer in the way of things to do, places to shop, opportunities for children and teens, that would be my biggest regret. Still, there are lots of pluses for Leoma and while we enjoy visiting Lakeland now, we are happy to get back home and away from the traffic, congestion, and the major over-crowding that is there.
