Sharon's Story

I am still in Fort Wayne and have been for over 20 years. After high school I went to IU for a semester then joined the Army. I was a Sergeant in the Military Police and stationed in Berlin, Germany guarding Checkpoint Charlie. I also guarded Rudolph Hess on a regular basis. After the Army I returned home. While working on my college degree in Criminal Justice I became a Deputy Sheriff and worked with the FBI and the Indiana State Police. I continued with my education and received my Master's in Education. I became an Academic Advisor at IU. e he was in the NBA playoffs but his mother attended and received his cap and gown. She received a standing ovation and I was interviewed by the New York Times. I had my 15 minutes of fame. I ended up working for Isiah for a time and we are still friends to this day. It's an honor to know him. When I left IU and stopped working for Isiah I was a Private Investigator and loved it. I found a kidnapped child and was able to bring her back home. I met and married my husband in 1986. He was a professor at IU. He died in 1998 and I raised my daughters (who were 9 and 5 at the time of his death) on my own. They are now 25 and 21 and doing quite well. I continue to work and love my job with Volunteers of America.
