Shawn's Story

Life Screwed off for a couple years after High school doing odd jobs and such to buy my first badass motorcycle. Had to work mostly crap jobs cause few respectable companies would hire a punk with a mohawk. Got my bike, got into a whole lot of mischief, got thrown in jail, got out, got a new plan. Worked as a speedy bike messenger in downtown denver to pay off court bills and dated cool Connie Hammis (class of 89) for 3 years. Decided to become a productive member of society... in my own special way. Began taking classes at various colleges in pursuit of a degree in Cybernetics (study of Artificial Intelligence and it's connections with human thinking). My end goal was and still is to do my best to improve man's ability to think...Once a large portion of the populace is thinking smart, the rest of the worlds issues will soon be resolved. Got straight A's for a few years...kinda wish I'd done that at Overland but at least I had a ball experiencing everything other than an education those years;) Then I got hooked on computer animation. Decided I couldn't wait the 8+ years it would take to finish my cybernetics degree and saw an opportunity to get involved in an industry at the forefront of applied cybernetics...Video Games. My grades rapidly fell to the wayside as I gathered together a small army of like minded volunteer students to make our first computer animated short film. Using my parents living room as the base of operations, we managed to wrangle some pretty impressive imagery out of those miserably archaic PC's and graphic programs. Never finished the film but managed enough cool video to land a position within the industry...the porn industry. Ok, so it wasn't main stream video games yet but the company made "interactive erotic cd rom games" and I was given the opportunity to head up their newest flagship product along with sinking my greedy mits into some hundred thousands dollar graphic computers and software. From those humbl...Expand for more
e origins, I rapidly moved up through the industry to a #2 position at Shiny Entertainment,a respected game company that evolved to make mostly movie based games. It's a super swell company with an influx of 80 to 120 of the the hippest, happiest, and smartest people in the industry...every work day was a real pleasure and I'd have happily showed up bright eyed each morning for no money at all. Along the way I bumped into my soul mate Lynel Berryhill. Since we merged, every moment I'm not working, I'm with her engaged in bliss filled endeavors. Nuff said:) As Shiny's design director I had the pleasure of collaborating with movie directors and celeb actors and such. Our first movie based endeavor ended up being the best example of a Video Game/Movie collaboration to date...the Matrix. Working closely with the Wachowski Brothers, the game took 3 years to develop, featured a storyline that ran parallel that of the movies, and featured all the real actors from the movie trilogy (Jada Pinkett Smith spent over a month on the motion capture stage performing scenes just for our game). The Wachowski bros (super cool dudes BTW)were nice enough to throw in an hours worth of movie footage filmed exclusively for the game. The Hard work paid off and the movie and game trilogy met with great success. "Enter the matrix" sold 6 million copies alone. Making video games is brutal. 16 hour days were commonplace as were 3 month "crunches". So as fun as it was, I felt a bit relieved when I recently stepped down from my position at Shiny to enjoy more quality time with the lovely and brilliant wife along with the newest love of my life, a ball of squiggles and giggles know as Connor Maddox Berryhill. Now I'm lending a hand in my wife's highly successful family business of safe making...designing safes, helping modernize the production pipeline, etc. Soon I'll be back at game design, only this time it'll be educational games for very little Tykes.
