Shawn's Story

Life As most of you know just a few short days after graduation from high school I made a B-line for the sunshine state to work for my brother (Steve). There were (as with all of us) big plans. Sherry Stitt and I did not end up together (not by my choice; although, we are still friends). I then met a girl who's father owned a sail boat and took me sailing with them. Flew to Hawaii then on to Auckland, NewZealand where I learned to sail a 52' boat, scuba dive, windsurf and many other things that go with boating. Our first trip met with disaster. We got slammed by a Typhoon, and , though, with a lot of hard work and survival determination we got enough power to find out where we were and were able to be towed into Norfolk Island to make repairs enough for the rest of the crew to limp back to Auckland for drydock repairs. I and the girl flew back to FL, we parted ways after a while. I spent many years in FL and ended up getting married there. My first daughter was born in FL as a miricle baby born@ 1lb & 13oz. Very trying as my first child but, what a wonderful young lady she has grown into with not a single thing wrong. The two older boys where hers from a previous marriage that I soon adopted at the ages of 3 and 5 years. As the children began school we quickly realized that this was NOT where we wanted our children to grow up as she was from Ohio and I from IN. So, we brought our family back to Fairmount for a couple of short years to be closer to my parents and help a friend on some remodeling projects which never really got started. After working some odd jobs (non career) we moved to OH where her family was. Mainly due to her mother passing from cancer. After her passing we were stuck there for about 4 years at which time I put my woodworking skills to use in a production level in a couple of different mills around Columbus,OH. Durring this time we had a son still born just a few days prior to his scheduled C-section. I then came across an offer f...Expand for more
rom the folks that make the equipment that I was working on, to come and work for them in North Carolina. I have been with them for over 12 years now, every day is something new. I'm involved with R&D, training,(of our tech's and customers) demonstrations, installations, and much more. Since being here in NC I have also enjoyed finally having the oppertunity to roadrace motorcycles on the competition level. Big fun there!! Then had another daughter to round out my 4 children. The childrens mother and I were seperated for a couple of years and have been divoriced for a little over 2yrs after a long and difficult marriage. However, one month after our legal divorice she was diagnosed with the same cancer that her mother and grandmother passed from. Without anyone else to take care of her I suggested she move back in the house for the 6 months of treatments she was to receive. That was 24 treatments and counting and; two long years ago. But, I have to believe I'm doing the right thing for my children by letting her stay there through this time as difficult as it is for me; since her time looks to be short. I also, by my oldest son (who was almost killed on a motorcycle the night before his graduation) now, have 2 wonderful grandchildren, Noah (2) and Shaelyn (9mo). My children in order; Kristopher (23), Patrick (20), Kaitlynn (15), Konnor ( passed, would be 12 ), Shawn "Madison" (10). I live in Statesville, NC on 3 acres (some wooded)and looking to add 5 more soon and will retire here if all goes well until then. I live 4.5hrs from the beach, 1-3 hrs from good hiking/awsome hiking and 2hrs from awsome white water rafting either west or north of me and an hour from a large amusement park, also; many, many rivers to canoe on with the children. I went back home for MY very first class reunion (20th) and was blessed to spend a little time with friends and Cole before his passing. I hope to see many more of you at the next (hopefully, family style),class reunion
