Sheffield Richey:

CLASS OF 1968
Asheville, NC

Sheffield's Story

A funny guy who was smart but slightly irreverent. I love to play tennis, organize things, and read thrillers and mysteries. I always wanted to be a married man when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. I stole out of school in the spring of 1968 my senior year to see a Sam and Dave concert downtown the night Martin Luther King was killed. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have my wife, a good job, and excellent colleagues to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero is Peter Lynch. After I married, I lived two years in Savannah, Ga with my new bride as an attorny. I moved to Alexandria 33 years ago and have never left. We hated Savannah. My wife is from Philadelphia. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Alan Vint, because we were close friends, and I have not heard from him since graduation.. I love tennis, golf, basketball, football, and my dogs, two Scotties. That I have not headed a company. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my bedroom and add on a walk-in closet. My dream home would be in Nelson or Albemarle County, VA.. Be firm. They want discipline, but they want to know you stand behind them. Let them do what they want to do within reason. General Webber. He was a great teacher and a caring guy. If I won $100 million, I'd give $5mm of it to Asheville School, then spend the rest on trusts for my kids, an new investment business and selected charit...Expand for more
ies. Yes. No. Yale had a great system with 12 large redisential colleges complete with libraries and dining halls. I would be in the winter on Kiawah Island and in the summer in Nelson County with my wife and new German shepherd. My current age is 59. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wrong. To have one last investment job for 3-5 years, then retire and travel a lot. She sent to Beloit College and dumped me. My best friend would tell you I'm funny, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as driven. I still dress very preppy and very well. I hate sloppy. I worked for a guy who a guy who was much older but paranoid, passive-agressive, and always played one-upmanship, I share my home with my wife and pets, which I find comfortable. I graduated second in my class from Georgetown MBA. I would have skipped law school, gone to an excellent business school, made a ton, and retired early. In 10 years, I hope to be retirement. I'm going to get there by being cheap. My oldest friend is John Amodeo from Yale. We met the first week, enjoyed our senses of humor, and our families have been best friends ever since. Not much. I have chaired every reunion but one. In third grad after having spend two miserable years earlier because I was rejected by most of the guys because I had relatively long hair, I was elected by my class (mainly the girls) "Best Citizen." As a loyal funny and dependable friend.
