Shelby's Story

To unwind I watch movies, read a good book and spend time with family My hero is my oldest brother Walter. Walter graduated from Carrollton HS in 1959 as Validictorian and won most of the academic awards and tons of football awards. He is my hero for being a good man all his life. He is currently a Priest in the Episcopal church of Houston. He has a great story. He worked at the Lunar Labs in Houston during the Apollo program then became a priest. He has PhDs in Biology and Theology. He loves nature and is a Texan to the bone. 7 days before graduation I married my HS sweetheart, Kay Stephens. After graduation I worked for a short period in Carrollton building soda machines. In 1971 we had our first child, Amy Elizabeth. It was during Viet Nam and I got a draft letter with a reallow number so rather than be drafted into the Army I entered the USAF. We spent from February 1972 to August 1972 going to school in Biloxi, MS to learn electronics. From 1972 to 1976 we were stationed at Randolph AFB, TX. 1976-1981 we were stationed at Eielson AFB, AK where I worked and flew on a special aircraft called Cobra Ball and Rivet Joint. We flew out of a small island in the Aleutions called Shemya. 1981-1982 we got out of the military after almost 10 years and went to work for the company who built the aircraft I worked on and was sent to Offutt AFB, NE. 1982-1985 we were sent to Okinawa (Kadena) Japan. 1985-1986 back to Offutt. 1986-1991 was our special assignment time sent to Berlin, Germany behind the then Iron Curtain. We stayed in Berlin until the Berlin Wall came down. 1991-1998 we were living in Commerce, TX and working for the same company in Greenville, TX where I started in 1981. 1998-2001 we lived in Denton, TX while I worked for IBM as a Sr. Consultant and flew 2600 miles a week. 2001-present we retired and moved to Alpine, TX in the far west desert just at the start of the Big Bend Park where I own a 4 acre place away from town. We have 2 super children, Amy born in 1971 and Daniel born in 1975. We also have recently been blessed by the birth of our first grand child, Athena Irene...Expand for more
born on May 17, 2009. Amy and her husband and my grandchild live with me here in the desert and my son lives with Kay in Round Rock, TX. At this point we have 5 dogs, 3 inside and 2 outside and love them all. One common note in our lives is we have always had dogs. We brought back a cool little white stray from Japan who even traveled with us to Germany. He passed away in Commerce while chasing an Armadillo at age 17. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Gary Hampton, because he was my best friend and confidant in trouble during HS. The teacher I would most like to see again is actually 2 teachers. First would be my Algebra teacher Mrs. Buckalew to show her I still have the sideburns and that I made it a pretty good life. Second was my Junior History teacher Mrs. Janet Hackney. I had such a crush on that woman but she helped me learn to talk to girls. Without her guidance I might have never asked Kay out. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to charity, then spend the rest on my children, my wife and a fishing cottage. My current age is 57. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wrong. I married my first crush and my first experience. My best friend would tell you I'm kind hearted and warm, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as cold and aloof. My wierdest job has been to work as a spy. Folks I am not kidding here. I can't say anymore without going to jail. I share my home with my daughter,, her husband Andrew and my grand daughter Athena, which I find the most rewarding event so far in my life. I won a major award from my company as Outstanding Contributor. They flew my wife and I back from Germany Business Class for a huge banquet and ceremony. I won again after returning to the states. My first job was at Booth Inc., where I got paid $1.80 and hour to build soda machines. What I remember most about it is how much I hate manual labor. I hope my friends remember me as a caring person who was truly interested in their welfare. I cry easily and am hurt just as easily.
