Shelda's Story

Life I moved from Naselle to Wenatchee in 1986, having always wanted to live on the dry side of the state, and see snow in the winter, the way it's supposed to be! My mom had already been struggling w/first Hodgkins Disease, then her final battle with Leukemia, and passed away on February 10, 1988, at the age of 48. This was so very hard for all of us kids and my dad, Larry. There is so much she didn't see or do, including meeting my husband, Kent. We were married On Sept. 25, 1990. I will soon be turning 49 so don't think this doesn't all cross my mind... Kent is now a retired mechanical engineer. We met through snowmobilling. We also ride motorcycles, go boating, was scuba-diving for awhile (but not recently), and I have 2 jet ski's (stand-up and sit down style). We also have 3 dogs, 2 of which are German Shephards and a dog we named 'Happy' that we found in the desert near Winnemucca, NV. You've probably surmised by now, there are no kids. School It should be no longer be a secret at this point in my life that about the one and only 'crush' I ever had was for Russ Tiegs, this being while we were in junior high. I think he ended up going to prison, didn't he...:) Anyways, I do have these fond memories of jr. hi and high school, although they probably wern't as great as I now remember them. I DO remember being shocked and horrified when one of our teachers told us we would lose contact with all our friends in school soon after we left. I knew he was all so wrong, but sadly, he was really right. I miss those old friends and simpler times. Sometimes I've dreamed about it. Did it really happen? Would I do it different next time? I don't know. We sure thought we knew alot though, didn't we? And yet, we were so young...I miss my old friends... College I was the oldest of 4 kids and it was always the expectation that we would go to college. There wasn't alot of money to finance that (and no finance plans either!) so I went to Green River CC first, thinking I would major in Forestry and then go onto WAZZU. I was all so wrong! My chemist...Expand for more
ry and math background were so weak (you can only cheat for so long, and these were critical subjects to have mastered and build on), that I had to look to my SECOND choice. That was psychology or social services. After a year at Fort Steilacoom I then somehow ended up being able to afford a year at PLU (on grants, student loans and a campus job). At that time they convinced me a major in Social Welfare was the way to go, so in 1978 I graduated, after 4 years total,w/a BA in Social Welfare. Never for a second would I have ever imagined affording or going to PLU, where I had taken so many swim lessons as a kid. PLU was a blast, I made some wonderful friends once again, such as in high school, and was able to continue on with track there as well. Workplace I'm not too accustomed to writing about myself. I've worked for the state of Washington now for 24 years (I can't believe it either!). All of that time has been something in 'social services', working with 'bad boys' at Naselle Youth Camp and Canyonview Group Home, then tiring of the weekend and shift work, went to working in the 'welfare office', which I couldn't ever fantom myself doing before, but did that for 14 years. The last 1-1/2 years I have been working for 'DDD', the state agency that serves the developmentally disabled folks. I was reaaly apprehensive about working with the DD folks but I LOVE working with this group of people! Somehow I've also always felt the need to hold down a second job. While at Naselle I drove school bus to fill in and remind myself what 'normal' kids were like, as compared to my 'bad boys' serving time. I continued this when I moved to Wenatchee, having my own bus route for a time with the Wenatchee SD, then also subbing for the Eastmont SD. More recently I turned to 'DJ-ing'. I've been 'DJ Shelda' now for 3 years and primarily do weddings but also a variety of other special events, birthdays, Christmas parties, charitable events...and sometimes including karaoke! I have always loved music although I've never felt inspired to sing in front of a group of people.
