Shelley's Story
After graduating from Oakton I spent four great years at William & Mary. I met my husband there, we both got local jobs and have lived in Williamsburg ever since. I work at the National Center for State Courts, a non-profit organization focused on improving the administration of justice in state courts. I've learned a great deal about the courts in the 29 years I've worked here that I thankfully never had the opportunity to learn from the 'user side'! I am an Association Manager, working with five different judicial and court organizations. We provide a wide variety of services to them, including conference planning and management. This means that during my career I've traveled to almost every state (somehow I've missed North Dakota) for conferences and, although the meetings are very time-intensive, I've been able to extend some of my trips to enjoy some absolutely amazing parts of our country - Denali National Park, Hawaii, the California coast, the beautiful Northwest, the Florida beac...Expand for more
hes and many places in between.
My husband Stan spent almost 25 years working at the local Community Services Board as a substance abuse counselor. After being laid off during the recession, he went into private practice and is so much happier. His schedule is more flexible and he sees clients who actually want help rather than those ordered by the courts to get it.
We don't have any children but have shared our lives with a number of wonderful dogs, currently Schuyler and Leo. They keep us busy and often entertained.
I found out in 1977 that I was born with only one kidney and it didn't function well. With a careful diet and a good doctor I was able to get by without dialysis, but finally in July 2000 had a kidney transplant, with a kidney donated from an amazing, wonderful friend.
I'm not sure I'll make it to the reunion but hope to be there. My parents still live in Mosby Woods so I get up that way fairly often, but I don't think I've seen anyone from Oakton for at least 30 years!
