Shelli's Story

My life so far. My husband Neil and I were married for 20 years in this photo taken September 2007. This was our fourth time walking down the aisle together. The first time I planned everything. The last three times Neil (the most unromantic man on the planet) planned and executed every detail. I think he still has some residual guilt about our first wedding. He had a panic attack the day before the wedding and decided I was going to spend all his money and he couldn't marry me. As you can imagine that went over really well. Anyway, we did end up walking down the aisle together the next day. I forgave him immediately, but I don't think he has forgiven himself. Getting married is fun for me and it reminds us to step back and appreciate where we have been and where we are going. The kids in the photo are our kids. Winston is 17 and Grace is 13 now. We live in a suburb of Philadelphia called Bryn Mawr. My Mom has a successful practice as an organizational psychologist. She is remarried to a man who is 51. My husband Neil is 53. My Mom and Chris have been married for 10 years and he could not love my kids more than if he were their biological grandfather. My Dad is remarried and still living in Houston. He no longer sails, but is into biking with my sister. My sister Stacie is a child therapist and has one daughter Katie 21 and she also still lives in Houston. She is a cycling mad woman. She races in 100+ mile races and is in phenomenal shape! After high school I went to SWTSU. I stayed there for 2 years and then transfered to NTSU. I stayed there for 2 years, then ended up returning to SWTSU for another year to finish my degree. I think I graduated with 160 hours. After college I had a hard time finding a job in something I liked. My Dad (probably being tired of supporting me) made some phone calls and I had 5 interviews in one day with Shell Oil. Shell transferred me to Delaware where they gave me a territory of 36 stations in Southern New Jersey. A woman that worked for me had graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. I used to go over to her house every night hang out and eat dinner. (Not a lot of women in the oil industry in those days.) Anyway, one night a guy came over that she had gone to college with and that is how I met my husband. I quit Shell after a year and went to work for a jobber buying service stations. The oil industry was not my calling. Neil and I married and I started designing and manufacturing a children's clothing line. (This is what my degree was in.) The line sold really well, but it was very difficult to manufacture in the states. I gave that up when we bought our first house. It needed to be remodeled. I fixed it up and then I had our son Winston. Almost 5 years later I had our daughter Grace. About that time...Expand for more
we decided to move again. This time we bought a house in beyond deplorable condition. It was built in 1880 and is about 10,000 square feet. I thought I could take 4 months fixing it up before we moved in. That was a joke. I have replaced all the wiring, piping... you name it I have restored it or replaced it. It has sort of been my full time and part time job while I stayed home with our kids. Now that they are older I have been looking for other things to do. I bought another old historic house at an auction and closed on that in late '07 just before the housing crash. I thought I would fix it up and flip it. Unfortunately, the crash came and we have decided to keep it as an investment and rent it out. It is only 2 miles away from our house. I have also taken up portraiture. My medium is oil paint. I really love it and I either can't stop painting or I don't paint anything for months. I will put up one of my paintings on my photos. My son Winston is obsessed with Architecture. He is currently attending summer school at Cornell University taking 2 architecture classes. He will be a senior in high school next year and we have home schooled him since 8th grade. We have PhD. candidate from the University of Pennsylvania come to the house every day and teach him their special subject. My daughter is a swimmer and can't keep her nose out of a book. When she was 7 she was attacked by a dog her assistant teacher brought in for a visit to the school. She received 60 stitches in her face and lost a tooth. It devastated our family. The physical pain she went through to recover is unimaginable, but pales in comparison to the emotional pain. She had severe PTSD. We had to give away our own two sweet Westies because they would give her flashbacks when they barked. She had to stay out of the sun for the first year. She couldn't go outside and play or even go to camp. The great thing that happened was that she taught herself to read. I think it was a great escape for her. The next 4 years were a very dark hole for our family. She has had a lot of therapy and is definitely on the mend. She took the ACT's when she was 12 and scored as one of the highest overall scores for 7th or 8th grade students in the United States. She also received a scholarship to take one course at Villanova University. We decided she would take an English literature class there in the fall. I am not sure about this because I think socially it will be weird for her at 13 in a class of college Freshman. She is academically ready, but she is very much 13 emotionally and is just starting to get interested in boys. She goes to a private all girl middle school and will continue to do that while she leaves for a long lunch to take her college class. So that's my story so far...
