Life I've been living in Alaska since 1975. Both of my kids were born in a local clinic, since we have no hospital. In fact, we don't have Lower-48 facilities and fixtures such as a bowling alley, movie theater, traffic lights! We do, however, have the most beautiful scenery in the world, and our little valley is called "The Valley of the Eagles," because of the high concentration of bald eagles (upwards of 6,000) that live in Haines during the winter due to the natural abundance of feed. We own 75 acres and a home in Haines which is north of Juneau almost at the end of Lynn Canal. We don't have roads that connect us to other towns in Southeast Alaska. Our mode of transportation between ports is via ferry, float plane or bush plane. My husband, Craig, was born and raised in Alaska. We own a liveaboard yacht adventure business where we take clients out for 6 or 7 days at a time, leaving from Juneau and going to Glacier Bay National Park, Elfin Cove and Pelican...the later of which the normal tourist to Alaska will never see...tiny boardwalk communities only accessible by float plane or private boat...no roads, no cars, etc. We are one of 15 charter operators in the State of Alaska with a 10-year permit to enter Glacier Bay National Park.
