Sheri's Story

Life Sheri considers herself to be a soul construction worker and architect; she dances butoh because its pulse permits penetration in to the nature of her own being and the deeper, essential vitality of the imaginative, universal inner cosmic soul. As a performance artist, Sheri’s work extends up and down the west coast, down into South America, and across the Pacific Ocean to Asia. Human sculpture dancing angel fairy mime work led her to the butoh and the dance-theatre troupe based in that art form, the P.A.N. A few highlights with this group are the Overseas Korean Arts Convention in Seoul, the International Butoh Festival in San Francisco, and Spaceboat TV at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. Some other notable performance venues in Seattle include the Showbox (YvaLasVegas + P.A.N.), Consolidated Works(Dreams from Wounded Mouth; Rockaradia), Center on Contemporary Art (100 Ways to Remove a President From Power; Egg City; Prizefighter; Sea Urchin Street), Henry Art Gallery (Debauchery Ball), SOIL(My Mother, My Father), Bellevue Art Museum (Crosspollination), Nippon Kan Theater(Curious Fish), Theatre Off Jackson (5000 Falling Souls), and On the Boards(Pinkk). While most of her work has been either with the P.A.N. or solo, Sheri has has a...Expand for more
lso worked with several other performance groups including Infernal Noise Brigade, Pyrosutra, Dappin Butoh, Kokoro, the Degenerate Art Ensemble, and TchKung. Sheri holds a BA in Theatre from Arizona State University and a Master’s in Education from the University of Hawaii. In addition to traditional stage movement and DesCroux mime techniques, Sheri has studied Capoeira Angola, breakdance, modern, and various other movement techniques. Butoh, however, remains at the core of her performance practice. She has been influenced by several Butoh teachers including Shinichi Momo Koga, Akira Kasai, Joan Laage, Su-En, Minako Seki, Katsura Kan, Diego Pinon, and Jay Hirobashi. Believing that teaching is the best learning, she co-teaches a weekly butoh class at her space at the Tashiro Kaplan Artist Lofts and on occasion facilitates other teachers from around the world in coming to teach the dance community in Seattle. In addition to performing, Sheri has produced a number of major events in, Seattle including Linescape, the Forest Festival, and the Ohana series. An active arts organizer, she is the founder and facilitator of the nonprofit artist cooperative Aunty147 serves as the Vice President of the board of directors at Center on Contemporary Art.
