Sheri's Story

Hi Everyone I was with a couple of friends last week and they were talking about their high school reunions and how they were looking forward to them....and that got me thinking. It's been 30 years since I graduated from high school. That was an oh my gawd! moment. And so that has been the motivation for this search on classmates. My story goes like this....after I graduated I went to UCLA - it took me five years to graduate because I couldn't work out what to major in. I finally settled on a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (study of movement of the human body). I was a member of the UCLA Women's Crew team and rowed at places around the state. Then to keep fit in between I started doing triathalons before they became trendy and popular. When I graduated I had a massive student debt and couldn't face the prospect of graduate school or working. So I joined the Peace Corps and worked as a sciene and English as a second language teacher in Kiribati. Yes, it is a country right on the equator - a series of coral atolls. I lived on the island of Abaiang and worked at the Catholic secondary boarding school run by I-Kiribati nuns and brothers. It was a fantastic time and I learned the language - Gilbertese and never once had the urge to convert to Catholicism or any other form of Christianity or Mormonism - which was just spreading itself into the Pacific. Then...in 1987, when it was time for me to return to the US....I just couldn't face returning - I went to Australia and fell in love. I had to return to the states because my visa ran out. So I returned to living with Wayne and Lorna (my wonderful, supportive parents!) for the year. I got a job teaching at a school for emotionally disturbed kids in Pasadena and of course I saved so much money from such a well paid job (NOT!). So I went to Alaska where a good friend was living and working in a small town called Dillingham. I worked there for the summer of 1988 and made a handy packet of money to fund my return trip to Australia. I met up with my boyfriend and off we travelled in a VW campervan around Australia. Then we settled back in Fremantle, Western Australia where he was from. I lived and worked there until 1997 when we moved to Kalgoorlie also in WA. While in Perth/Fremantle I did a variety of teaching jobs - worked at a special education school for kids with severe intellectual disability, taught Adult Literacy classes for adults with intellectual and learning disabilities, ran Adult Literacy classes for unemployed job seekers and had a fun job being an 'agent provacateur' or as the Head of the Technical College said - a pain in the arse! I was the person responsible for implemeting policy and programs to increase access for people with disabilities. It was such a great job being a thorn in their side. But...there were other places to go - things to do. So we got teaching jobs at Kalgoorlie School of the Air (google it to find out more). That was such a f...Expand for more
un teaching job. Then we split up in 2004 and I lived in Esperance on the south coast for awhile (google that place too!) where I learned how to surf on the most delightful sandy beaches and then met my current partner and I decided to move up to Darwin to be with him. And this is where I am currently at. Damien is a psychologist and was once a primary school teacher - like me! He works for himself seeing clients...and also works for a number of Aboriginal Health organisations. We regularly travel out to remote communities sometimes driving sometimes flying. We have no children....though I feel I have had lots of children through my teaching career and I have 2 'godchildren' that keep me connected. Plus some very good friends who have children that I think of as my nieces and nephews. My brother Gary, is married to the most gorgeous woman, Alejandra, who is from Chile. They live in Mesa,Arizona. And my mum, Lorna, still lives on Oaks Avenue in Monrovia, same address, same phone number. My dad, Wayne, died young (59) in 1993, from a heart attack - and smoking. That was tragic. As you may have gathered that since I graduated from high school, I went a very different way....both politically and....spiritually. I was an avowed athiest for awhile - but now I identify with Buddhism. And politically - well, with Ronnie and the Bushes....and Billie boy too, I just couldn't stomach the hypocrisy and the charade of democracy. So, living in Australia has really suited me these past years. I must say, Obama is a man I trully identify with and I think Americans are lucky to have him. Not that Australia is perfect. By no means, however, there is a functioning national health care system here and a functional democracy where everyone votes. I am never one to mince words and don't suffer fools lightly. Having said all that, I am looking forward to finding out your stories. For some reason, when you google sheri lochner...I come up! So get in touch that way or find me on facebook. Well, that was posted in 2009. It's now New Year's Eve 2012 and it's time for an update....I split up with Damien last year (2011) in July. Found a house to rent 1 block from the beach in Nightcliff - just perfect for me and my dog Roxy. I decided to visit Lorna and my brother in November 2011 for about 6 weeks. That stay turned into 7 months because my mum was very sick. I'm so glad I was there for her. While I was there with her, I decided to move back to the states to be with her. Lorna's health is pretty good now that she's on medication for her heart, but I don't want to get that call, so in about 3 months - around March of 2013, I will be back in the states. I am scared and nervous and excited. I've lived over half my life outside the states, so returning is huge. While I was there earlier this year, I managed to hook up with some of you and that was great. I'm looking forward to meeting up with you again. May 2013 be a year of new beginnings.
