Sherri's Story

Well, it's been a long strange ride, but here I am considering returning to the hometown for a 40th reunion. I am married to a wonderful man who is supportive, loving, intelligent and messy. We have shared our lives for the past 8 years, with our baby girl Hissy, all 11 ponds of brown, gray and white fur, who showers us with meows, tail quivers, head butts and all other form of feline affection. I chose to not have children. For those of you who knew my family, you will know why! That decision has given me the freedom to see much of the world, and I'm not done yet. As many of you know, I left school to help support the family when my grandfather died. I always wanted to finish school, but life took me in another direction, down many roads. I have lived in New Jersey, Nebraska, Colorado, Alaska, Canada, Scotland, Germany, North Carolina and now in Maryland. Once I complete my doctorate, I want to move to the Taos area in northern New Mexico, unless I can get a job teaching in Ireland, Scotland or Australia. In case you haven't figured it out yet traveling is one of my passions! I received my GED in 1973, but didn't start college until 1996, at the ripe old age of 46. Making up for lost time, I completed my BA in 2 years carrying a double course load and working full time, and did the same for my MS at Johns Hopkins, which is what brought me to Maryland in 1999. I had thought the education train had reached the end of the line, until 2...Expand for more
005 when I decided to get my PhD in psychology. I am almost there and hope to be doctor Sherri, by my 60th birthday in 2011. Anyway, I'm planning that as my 60th birthday present to myself. I currently work as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor at an Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, serving Medicaid, uninsured and homeless populations. I am also in the process of opening my own small private practice (in my spare time, LOL!). Between work, school and marriage, I sleep once a week whether I need it or not (that used to be easier 20 years ago). I have just planted my garden 2 weeks ago, have to have fresh herbs for cooking in the summer. Watering and pruning help me unwind and reconnect with nature before and after work. Having the Chesapeake Bay 10 feet from my back porch doesn't hurt either! I love to listen to live music, Classic rock, Celtic rock, traditional Irish music, blues and Jazz. Dancing is another passion, but as I age, I pay for it the next day in aches and pains, but it's worth it! I believe; that laughter is the best medicine;that life is too important to take it too seriously; that the only way to repay a kindness is to pass it on; and that love is a rare commodity, cherish it when it comes to you. So, in closing, I hope that for those of you who remember me, life has treated you kindly and my wish for you all is that you have health, love and happiness for the rest of this journey we call life! Be well my friends.
