Sherrie's Story

I worked for the F.B.I for six and a half years. I met J. Edgar Hoover. I performed once in Gypsy as Electra. Body suit, lights and all. I played in the Light Opera orchestra a few times. I met Robert Kennedy and all the children. I have a personal note from John F. Kennedy. While dating my to be husband, (an M.p.) we went to J.F.K. gravesite at night and sat with the guards on duty. I was right in the middle of the riots in Washington when Martin luther King was shot. We lived in Germany for five years. During the height of the cold war I participated in a smuggling ring sending Bibles, coffee and clothes to friends in East Germany. We hiked mountains in Germany, Switzerland (the Swiss Alps) and Austria. We went to Vienna. I had a Eurail pass and traveled frequently to Bremerhaven and Frankfort to visit friends and to shop. My German was laughable at best and now it is awful. But I always got what I needed while there. Our two oldest sons were born in Berlin. We were in Berlin for the birth of our second child when the P.L.O. bombed military installations in Berlin on Christmas eve. one of the bombs damaged the hotel we were staying in. We lived in Homestead, Fl while we were assigned to Homestead Air Force Base. Our third son was born there. We lived in Ft. Knox, Ky for three years. The biggest thrill for my boys was to drive 32 miles to Elizabeth town so we could go to a Burger King for dinner. We moved back to Tampa in January, 1980. Daddy died in June 1980. My husband came back from a two year duty in Germany. We divorced in 1984 and the children and I moved to Englewood, Fl. My olde...Expand for more
st grandson is in Boy Scouts and I am on the Troop committee as the Advancement Chair. Matt should be an Eagle Scout in three years time. Hurricane Charley destroyed my house. The S.B.A, gave me a mortgage for thirty years to replace my mobile home. My boys are now grown and on their own, but they stay close to MOM. There has been a whole lot of excitement and upheaval in my life and I am satisfied to stay where I am now. In forty years I have lived at 39 different addresses and it sure is nice not to be moving around all the time. I love to just stay home and putter around. Work is still in my future for the time being, but I want to spend more time researching my family history. So far on Daddy's side, there is a witch 12 generations from me; the founder of Lexington, Ky; Orville and Wilbur Wright are cousins. The Benham family were original settlers in New Haven, Ct; Cincinnati, Ohio; Dayton, Ohio. There are roads and streets named after them. Wright Patterson A.F.B is related as namesakes to my family. On my mother's side, we find that Chief Powhattan is our ancestor. He is Pocahontas father. My oldest grandson's grandfather is Chickasaw indian, whose family is related to Geronimo who is grandfater's great-grand-uncle. I'm having so much fun. My children are only the third generation born in the U.S. My husband's family are from Lithuania, and Poland. Polish is still spoken in their households. I have learned to cook a few really auathentic polish dishes. My nest two grandsons mother is Sicilian on one side and Hatfield and McCoys on the other. truly.(Hawkins family from West Virginia.)
