Sherryjane (Sherry's Story

If you want to reach me, I am under Sherryjane Cooke (my real name) on Facebook and Twitter and I rarely visit Classmates...sorry. Gosh, I always said I would live in Paris and never League City. But here I find myself married to my high school love, Larry Cooke, from Dickinson, who is also my best friend, and not in Paris but League City since 1964. I now have a dream job as a contract journalist and critic - Contributing Journalist for AXS.com Entertainment, a part of AEG Entertainment, AEG is one of the leading sports and entertainment presenters in the world. Before the Examiner.com closed business, I wrote three columns - National Country Music Examiner and Texas Country Music Examiner in most all major Texas cities, reviewing and writing about all things music, venues and events. I remember the day that Mr. Parr told me I would never be a writer...and I AM just that,.. and a damned good one! I've been nominated by for the Austin American Statesman's Award for Best in Social Media and Journalism. So don't let people from the past color you view of what you can be. I just chalk his remark to his disdain my girls' "hooked on surfing" group missing school at any time when the waves were just right - but still making A's in his advanced English Class. lol I also wrote a column on National Near Death Experiences, prior to Examiner.com closing. (I actually had an NDE at 17, when I, Janie Birsner and Valerie Vernier, coming back from surfing, were cut off at the League City exit (I-45) by a huge black Cadillac. Even though Janie swerved to avoid the cadi, the front tire blew - sending us and the van end rolling over and over on its sides and then hitting a sign - flipped end over end three times. Just as this happened, I found myself drifting to somewhere else...yep, the tunnel. What a life changing experience - see the full description below.) I have three grown kids, Shawn, Stephen and Summer, who is in Hollywood, LA recruited by AMDA(American Musical and Dramatic Academy,) graduated with her BFA in Film/Acting and has already been in short films and is hilariously funny, like a Jenny McCarthy (but now, singing is her passion and she's an awesome singer/songwriter and just cut her first song video) She carries around her guitar case on flights and people always think she's Taylor Swift...she has that look and charisma. She is also involved with LA's Mosaic Church and for a while, the Hollywood Playground of Dreams for children of stars' kids to those who may not have a mentor or can even be living below poverty level. She is so bubbly and loves kids so much - teaches singing, guitar and other things to help a child's talent bloom. She recently traveled to Kenya to help build a music school for a small village(before the 2014 Ebola outbreak, thank God,) The trip was life changing for her - she appreciates all she has. She even filmed much of the trip and had the kids sing to us on video! Currently, beside her singing career, she is in a ministry group, visiting and helping the homeless along LA's Skid Row. My oldest son, Shawn lives in Florida and is a draftsman and a website designer master - he is also a photographer and is in ministry at his church (just couldn't switch him back to Catholic!) He's married to beautiful Mandy (a wonderful teacher) who used to be either Chip or Dale in Disney World, but they met at a school of theology in Kississime, Florida. At first it was hard explaining that my son was married to a little chipmunk, but hey, they got over it. lol They have two beautiful sons, James and Nathan. The loves of my life! Stephen, my youngest son, was at first my payback for all the things a Catholic kid shouldn't do! But he now has a very successful roofing company and is married to Amber who has two beautiful girls, Natalie and Megan. He has a son Colton, and then Bentley and Astin by Amber. Still trying to get the grand-kids in the backyard with the rubber pool, bible and the babies, slyly baptizing them. lol I was told I was stuck up during high school, but so mistaken for my shyness, not the former. Rushing through a two year stint in nursing school (27 hours a semester,) standing in on surgeries and amazed at how those surgeons can hold us alive while our bodies are opened, was incredible. After our class found out we had never been a member of the Student Nurses Association, being turned away at the doors of a convention in Houston, we immediately went to the dean, knowing our $60 a semester to belong to the National SNA, was going elsewhere since the School of Nursing at Alvin was opened, his investigation led us to the evil witch who had been pocketing the money for over 20 years. She tried to deny, but they found her out. The gold Cadillac and furs were a hint. She hated anyone of color, made remarks that would have put her in jail for discrimination and theft, and you were not allowed makeup or anything that did not meet her 1940 standards. You were not even supposed to DATE. God forbid. We hid around corners from her, lest she decided you were the target of the day. She only paid back a portion to the nurses long ago graduated, erased many of the new student records (was told this by a secret friend in records), and finally to escape jail or as justice might have it, she ended up in a mental institution. She may have even died there. So, I went after my first love, art, and found an ad agency I loved. But, after 3 years, I began to see that our clients were calling me specifically. Why couldn't I do this myself??? So, I created my own agency (pulled Larry in to it) and our clients ended up to be international, national and U.S and locally based. That led to more prestigious things, and entertainment production, publicity and management became our most profitable. My husband and I started our full-service ad agency on a shoestring and just us. Before I knew it - 15 years and 20 employees later, and a $1,7500,000 agency billings it was also beginning to be affected by the '80's oil crunch. But we were still growing. After 14 years of owning our ad agency in Clear Lake, and working with and producing events in the (now gone) AstroHall with entertainers like Ray Charles, Alabama, Hank Williams, Jr., Tammy Wynette, Merle Haggard, the Mandrell's and so many more and multiple trips to Los ...Expand for more
Angeles, Atlanta and Chicago, it began to take its toll on me. It was 24-7, if you count dreaming about it at night always! At 3:00 a.m. in the morning, driving to a production studio on the other side of Houston to edit a TV commercial and being 8 months preggers, I threw the biggest hissy fit and threatened to kill anyone close to me...not really, but close. It was if God came down on a bolt of lightning and said Sherry needs a 9-5 job after the baby is older! Soooo....Larry took over and turned me loose to find that job! The small straw that broke the camel's back led to a 9-5 job...Halleljuia!!! The job was with UTMB in Galveston in Public Affairs/Community Relations/Business Development for 15 years. I decided I didn't want a full time (24-7) job like the ad agency no matter how exciting! So, in a more leveling-out move - I was recruited by the University of Texas Medical Branch to set up their first Business Development and Marketing Department. I loved my job, and after 14 years of really being blessed, Then Hurricane Ike turned UTMB into a wasteland - my office was flooded even above the ceilings! (We were in New Braunfels, enjoying sun and river floating in paradise!) Came back to a wind damaged home - Ike had ripped off parts of the roof, blown the bolted doors open and ruined so much, especially my furniture. After the Hurricane Ike layoffs, there was nothing to "market.". when my boss called each of us in to a small room at a cafe to talk and lay us off...so many came out crying. When my turn came, I was very thankful, understanding (because the atmosphere around there for the last three years had become so dog-eat-dog and sexually harassing in my department that the first thing I did after leaving the cafe, was to do my happy dance right there in the parking lot! Woohoo, out of there...but I sure missed my doctors there. Our ad agency and later, the PR/Writing job with axs.com was perfect for me. It soon became my passion, Through our agency and now with axs, I have good friends like Woody Guthrie's wife, Ray Benson, Shake Russell, Cross Canadian Ragweed (and Cody Canada,), Tommy Cash (Johnny's bro) and too many to mention Texas Country Music songwriters, producers, studios, singers, festival organizers and venues and was an honored guest to the TMA's in May. Now my singers, songwriters and venues use my quotes on their music within their own web pages. That's a true honor. I once had a National Near Death Experiences column with the now closed Examiner. I was given this title from our editors, after they learned of my own experience at seventeen and soon to be 18 in August. August 15 would be my start date in nursing school. Janie (Jane Ellen Birsner Compton) and Valerie (Valerie Vernier Ray) and I were coming back from surfing, laughing and having a blast and bound for dates later. At the exit we had to swerve to miss a huge black Cadillac driven by an Al Capone look-alike (cigar and all!). Janie's uncle' van had a blowout and the van was flipped end over end two or three times, then rolled at least four times and we were all ejected, witnesses said. The things I experienced during those moments of flying through the air and hearing the van scraping and glass crunching within inches of my head, changed to instant darkness and the tunnel we all hear about, with an angel or God guiding me closer to that beautiful light. I convinced Him that I had things yet to do on earth and described them as they have since occurred today! I was told (telepathically) that I did need to think about my future life and could return. The rest of the story ends up with the van crushed into a ball, Valerie almost losing her leg, Janie with severe road burns and cuts and me with my almost cut off little finger stuck in my long hair and a broken foot. A man sat me down, grabbed my wrists, tenderly removed my stuck finger from my hand and then firmly held my wrists down to keep me from moving it. I looked up to see this kind person...and it was my dearly loved "Uncle Gene" who lived and worked in Angleton and Freeport. I was shocked when he demanded sternly that I put my head down. Immediately my mind said "Wait, the wreck just happened!!! How did he get here so fast to find me?? Ignoring his demand, I quickly looked back up to ask him just that. But it was not my Uncle Gene at all, it was a young man in the car in front of us blonde, not dark haired like my uncle Gene, yet he had never let go of my wrist!!! Do angels take the form of someone you love to calm you? I think so. I asked Janie and Val recently, and they experienced nothing like that. Anyway, be it a head injury or a real near death experience, it changed me. I understood people just by briefly talking to them, I loved everything in life, birds, trees, sunsets, they were now so vivid and alive to me, and best of all I loved people! I turned from a shy little 17 year old to someone who has never met a stranger. Crazy, huh? But it's real life. So, I have found a way to explore, research medical causes and generally explore that realm which so changed me. I'm Ioving it and loving life! So, have faith in God and yourself, my friends, and adapt, adapt, adapt. It's fun reinventing myself! I love and miss all my classmates, mourn for those we've lost through illness, accidents and during Vietnam and Gulf War, plus many of our children still in such horrific wars. I hope to hear a wonderful voice from my past... ok, well, I hope to read some typing from my friends from the past. It's funny and wonderful that we never lose that desire to rock on! So through everything, I love my family, friends, Facebook/Twitter clans, and my church, St. Mary's Catholic Church (Monsignor Cargill, rest in peace.) I am very involved in causes and organizations for PTSD, Missing Persons, ending Homelessness and stopping abuse of humans and animals.I am a member and supporter of The Nashville Country Music Hall of Fame, Texas Music Cares, The Academy of Texas Music, Radio Free Texas, the CMT community, GAC, Comedy Central and MTV's groups. I hope you'll find me too on Twitter or Facebook under Sherryjane (yes together) Cooke you can find the links on the "about" Facebook page. Love ya'll and please contact me anytime. I use Facebook mostly. But try to get back here asap. God Bless!
