Sherry's Story

Life (with updates Jul08) "Truth, crushed to earth, shall rise again" - William Cullen Bryant Hey all - After the weirdness and soul-searching of my teenage years, and the angst and reality checks of adulthood, I now find myself living by faith and a gentle passion for Jesus Christ as a single mom in Indiana. It's a life marked by knowing myself through and in the Lord, trusting Him to give grace enough for each day, for myself and my three children, and hoping with every dawn to be "surprised by joy", to borrow C.S. Lewis' phrase. My prayers are to leave this world having touched as many people as possible with His love and living authentically for Christ, not phony, not schmaltzy or shallow, but *real* in what counts for eternity. I'm grateful that the older I get, the more deeply I'm drawn to what genuinely matters, and it's not in the things we own, the positions we occupy, or the toys, power or status the world says makes someone important. At least, I hope that I'm not alone in having discovered this. Despite having left the wreckage of two non-marriages behind, I've *not* left my child-like idealism or hope in things that are Good and Right in the same dust, though maybe through the fire, I've gained some wisdom and left naivete in the ashes. The more years that pass, the more ageless I feel, living in the "already" but yearning for the "not yet", and often feel like a sojourner when most around me live for the "here and now". But I've been through and seen things that testify to something greater, found in the heart of my Saviour, and that's my peace for now. Been working with a property management company for the last five years, nothing to do with my biology degree from Va Tech, but the road since college has taken quite a few bends and turns. It keeps the bills paid and food on the table, a provision for which I'm grateful, and yet am hoping one day I'll find some expression for more of a ministry outreach, maybe through my writing - not quite sure how I'll be led but confident that the timing will be right, whenever change finds me! My personal passions, when there's a breath of spare time, still remain in reading and dialoguing in theology/apologetics (love Jonathan Edwards and Charles Spurgeon especially), and organic gardening, with recreating my grandparents' Ohio backyard by dedicating virtually every inch of my diminutive 1/4-acre subdivision lot to fruit trees, berry bushes, and a nice-sized plot for veggies, plus a massive collection of figs grown in containers. And in sheer defiance of that obnoxious half-century mark, I love eating healthy and try to fit in time for running, gotta keep that girlish figure :o). Definitely should've pursued either nutrition or horticulture! Music tastes lately run the gamut of Loreena McKennitt, Bebo Norman, vintage Jeff Beck and some privately-cherished bl...Expand for more
ues guitar tracks by a friend. Indiana's been a mellow spot to have lived for the past 26 years, and the kids and I call Noblesville home. Hamilton County has gotten national recognition as one of the most desirable areas for families, and the cost of living is thankfully affordable, but I do miss the east coast and being closer to ocean and mountains and most importantly the rest of my family. Although mom passed away in '87, my dad will turn 90 on July 22nd and is still out in Rockland along with brother Brian (9/11 WTC survivor!!) and my sister Suzie down in NJ. Younger brother Scott lives close by with his dear family in Fishers, Indiana, so I'm glad for having half the Emch siblings based out here in the Indy area. Re-marrying some day? I don't know, that's up to the Lord. It'd take an amazing person and even more amazing ability to trust again, only by sheer grace. But I'm content to wait patiently. Please continue to wish me strength guiding my three wonderful teens to become the responsible gifted adults they're already transforming into and to prayerfully put their trust in the Lord first and foremost. My oldest, Paul, just graduated high school this spring with honors and in the top 10% of his class - he's got a mind that runs circles around me, hilarious sense of humor in a droll catch-you-unawares vein, and yet still searching for some personal grounding, being his own toughest critic, as he heads toward Purdue University this fall to study meteorology. Daughter Leah will likely do self-study via homeschool, having felt she's best out of the "mainstream" of the public high school system and finding her own pace and artistic path for now. Her poetry needs to be published one day, its imagery is both raw with angst, yet heart-breakingly gorgeous. She has a serious boyfriend and already starts melting around the eyes when dreaming about having her own little ones some day (not TOO quickly, though, please!!). My youngest, Caroline, looks toward eighth grade with her usual serenity, staying her sweet serious self, with hopes of being a published author before she's 20-something. Like her mom, she's somewhat quiet but embodying the "still waters run deep" motif, with occasional fizzy moments emerging from beneath her gentle reserve. My love and prayers to all of you, would love to be in touch with old friends, especially if I can pray or encourage you through anything that's got you wondering what really matters in life. Take care and God bless! Sherry "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." - 2 Cor 4:16-18
