Sherry's Story

I thought it was about time to update my personal story once again and add some recent experiences. We enjoy living in Greensboro, NC and although our city (compared to L. A.) seems small in size, there are actually 270,000 people living here. What makes Greensboro unique is our revitalized downtown area. It looks like a throwback to "Main St." but offers so much more in the way of restaurants and theatre. Our city is currently featuring a new event called "17. Days" and features an amazing collaboration of the arts and cultural experience. From blues, bluegrass and classical music to plays and poetry, it's all there for the enjoyment of those who seek to be touched by creativity. Harvey and I continue to live in the same home and feel fortunate to be surrounded by the natural beauty of one of many lakes and wooded areas throughout the city. Our daughter, Faun, purchased her own home last year and now lives only five minutes away. She continues to work for our daily newspaper and is still single. Since there are no grandchildren on the horizon, I am semi-content to have a grand dog (lol), Harpo, who I happily walk each day. Although I remain active in the Greensboro Newcomers, now that I am no longer on the Board, my time has been freed up to pursue new interests. It has been my good fortune to have been selected to participate in the City Academy of Greensboro. This once-a-year program is designed to teach a select group of individuals about the community. It is an 11 week "Civics" course (plus three electives) that goes into great detail about our police, fire, transporation and water resources departments. We are able to interact with the Mayor, City Council, Police Chief and many department managers. It is truly an eye opener about the complexities of how a city runs and has become a real passion of mine. We finally made a visit to L. A. to host a 95t...Expand for more
h birthday dinner for Harvey's mother. It was a lovely affair at the Odessy restaurant. While staying in L. A., it was quite hectic trying to see as many people as possible. Unfortunately, we were there for only six days and there wasn't enough time to see everyone. Hopefully, we'll return for another visit in the next year or two. It has been 15 years since I last saw NY and, at that time, it was on an expense account! That is one aspect of working I miss..... Our daughter, Faun and I, had the opportunity to visit a close girlfriend (Carol) there over the 9/11 weekend and were able to see the newly completed 9/11 Memorial. It is everything you may have watched on television and even more. The amazing resilience of New Yorkers is displayed (in great detail) through the architecture and beauty that impacts you as one walks throughout the site. A touching and very spiritual feeling is in every corner of the memorial. On our way out of the Memorial, we were interviewed by the New York Post and it was interesting to hear how 9/11 affected Faun, Carol and me. I encourage everyone to visit this awesome, yet someber tribute to our country and those who lost their lives under such horrific circumstances. On a lighter note, luck was on our side and Times Square was empty the day we stood in line for half price theatre tickets. My choice was Jersey Boys and it was one of the most entertaining musicals I've ever had the pleasure of watching on Broadway. Fall is just beginning and a coolness is in the air. Soon the leaves will begin to turn magnificient shades of red, orange and yellow. It is one of my favorite seasons and a time when you begin to realize the holidays are "just around the corner." For a native Calfornian, I will never tire of seeing nature at it's best. Until next time, I wish my former classmates good health, happiness and new adventures in life.. .
