Shirley's Story

After retirement, my husband Jim and I moved from Reno, Nevada to Mobile, Alabama. We were tired of the desert, cold winters and dry air . We moved to Mobile, Alabama in 2004, and it has been quite an experience. We moved into our house two months before Hurricane Ivan hit, and needless to say we weren't prepared for that adventure. Fortunately, we suffered very little damage. The only thing we lost in Ivan was a large oak tree that landed in the neighbor's yard. Not having been through a hurricane before, my husband panicked and made me pack what I could get into our car and flee at 2:00 am the morning Ivan hit. We were just ahead of the hurricane all the way to Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. I was very upset, because he had convinced me that every thing we had would be gone when we got back. Well, to make a long story short, we came home the next day after the hurricane and our house was not damaged. That is the last time I will flee from a Hurricane. We sufferd no damage during Dennis or Katrina. Although ther...Expand for more
e was a lot of devastation around us, we were virtually safe. We enjoy Mardi Gras. Did you know Mardi Gras originated in Mobile. We have almost a month of parades and formal balls. All of downtown shuts down on Joe Cane and Mardi Gras day. It is a holiday here. I love catching those beads and moon pies. The horticulture is wonderful. The Azaleas bloom February through March, the Camellias bloom in December through January and everything else blooms in between. I have two grown children, Troy Dews and Shelly Kendall. Troy has a son and lives in Reno. Shelly has seven children and lives in Abilene, Texas. Although I miss many of my friends in Reno, I have met wonderful friends here in Mobile. I joined a group called New Mobilians with members from all over the country who have moved and relocated here. I am also active in the Mobile Art Community. You may view my work at shirleymckellar.blogspot.com. Anyway, I could go on, but no one has probably read this far. So take care and let me hear from you. Shirley
