Shirley's Story
Life. . .
Enjoying being a grandparent, turning my energy to my new teaching position, my renewed commitment to my health, and hoping to find the Last Love of my Life. . .
I love staying in touch with COHS Lancers. . .and any RCC Tigers from the mid sixties!! Being a community college instructor now, I often tell my students stories of my days as a journalism and speech major at a fantastic school.
I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. I have taught many different subjects throughout my career.
I loved teaching English as a second Language when I was in Graduate School. My students were all from Japan. I learned to love the food and the culture of Japan during the two years that I taught.
My first High School teaching position was at Bishop O'Dowd in Oakland, where I taught Speech and English. I left teaching to support myself and my son Chris. I landed some temporary work that eventually led me to management positions in Electronics Purchasing.
After many years in the world of High Tech manufacturing and sales, I returned to teaching high school while living and working in Seattle. ...Expand for more
There I taught Business and Marketing and advised students in the DECA program. I also coached students in Seattle's Urban Debate League for three years .In the Summer of 2006, I moved back to California from my 18 year adventure in the Northwest. I lived among ancient redwoods, near the beautiful Pacific beaches in the Santa Cruz mountains. Upon my return to California in 2006, I tutored elementary students in a technology based after school program, Older Adults in a computer Skills program and IT skills for Campbell Adult Community Education.
Now I have moved to Fort Worth, TX to be closer to my GrandBabes and family. I teach English at Tarrant County College and am adjusting to Texas life. I am enjoying getting to know more about my family history and my great grandfather who was born right here in Tarrant County in 1859. Mr Rosen would be proud of my research skills in history.
One teacher that I would LOVE to see again from my high school days is Mrs. Barbara Story, my first Speech teacher. I had her for two speech classes and also Sophomore English--I loved her gentler manner and her sweet encouragement for shy students like me. She was a pleasure to learn from in so many ways!
