Shirley's Story

Life I have been married to John Pokorny for 35 years in June this year. Prior marriage for 13 years gave me three children: Ronna,48, 1 son and 1 daughter; Carma, 47, 2 sons; Blaine, 46, 1 son and 1 daughter. We raised one grandson beginning at age 5. He is 25 and will graduate from Angelo State with a Masters in Applied Physics, a Minor in Math and a second Minor in Geology. The other childres are high school graduates with the exception of the youngest granddaughter who is in high school. I retired in 2004 after working 28 years at Bank of America. The last 18 were spent in the Trust Department. I have been asked to work part time for the bank helping throughout the bank where I am needed. I set my own hours working 12 to 24 hours per week. This leaves time for me to do my other job. John and I attend Gun Shows in Texas and New Mexico. We are also the promoters for the Permian Basin Gun Show held in Odessa in January, March, June and August. We sell pistol grips with a few rifles, shotguns and occassionally pistols. We like to hunt but have lost our lease after 30 years at the end of 2005. Last year was sad for us and all our family because we didn't find another place for us all to go. Maybe this year. We have 2 dogs. One full blood Blue Healer, male, named Gizmo, his daughter, Silver, half Blue Healer and half German Sheppard 2010 started out as a good year. However, that soon became one that has left us still not recovered. On June 2, while we were in Albuquerque for a gun show, our house caught on fire. We hurried home to a mess. The front bed room, hall and front bath room were destroyed along with the middle 1/3 of the roof. The rest of the house received heat and water damage so much so that the entire house had to have all the walls torn out, the carpet pulled and thrown out, all appliances...Expand for more
, cabinets, food, anything plastic, and our clothes. We spent 3 months in hotels, eating out every meal, having to go to the laundry to keep what few clothes we had clean. We finally got a bedroom completed so we could get back in to the house, where we have an icebox, George Foreman, toaster oven, toaster and micro wave to do what little cooking we can do but mostly tv dinners. All new appliances are in the den waiting for new cabinets to be delivered for the kitchen. First cabinet maker fired because he made the wrong cabinets for us, second cabinet maker finished cabinets but went away for Thanksgiving holidays and never returned, third cabinet maker Lowe's making new cabinets four to six weeks, we are in the fourth week waiting. Our household furnishings we were able to keep are in a 40' storage container in our front yard waiting for the cabinets to get completed so the move in can start. In July, John became sick and had to be put in the hospital. He was taking cumiden and almost bled to death. Five pints of blood and four days in the hospital got him well enough to come home. In October, I took sick and had three days in the hospital. They discovered I had colon Cancer. I was operated on December 8 and had about 2 1/2 feet of my large colon removed and have been doing fine. In January, the doctor decided I should have chemo, so I am taking it every two weeks. Today, I started my 5th treatment and am doing fine. I am only suppose to have to take it for four months. We are about half way there. In November, we lost John's mother, she was 98 years old. Had she lived until December 28, she would have been 99. If we can keep our sence of humor for a few more months, we should have our house and lives back together. We continue to do the gun shows and trust in the "Good Lord" to continue his blessing on us.
