Shirley's Story

Hi! Well, as most of you know, I couldn't wait to get out of Kalama, as I had outgrown the high school scene as soon as I was able to drive. I went to college twice, and met my husband, Kelly, at the University of Idaho. Got married in 1992. We moved to Boise, ID in 1993. I have worked for 13 years in the public school system there with students with learning disablities. Just last year, 2007, Kelly was transferred to Manassas, VA (remember your US history--the first battle of the Civil War was fought here). We have really enjoyed being on the East Coast: lots of history, traffic, humidity, beautiful scenery, terrific thunderstorms, pollution and recreational opportunities. Kelly and I have been to some pretty neat places out here like DC, New York City, Boston, the Shenandoah Mountains, plus several of the Civil War battle sites. d in June 2009 when we will be transferred back to Boise, ID. I am again in the public school system here, but working with students with severe and profound disabilites. What a challenge and very rewarding. As many will recall, I had quite a love of sports in high school. That has stayed with me throughout the years and Kelly and I are still in training. We have competed in mountain bike racing, road cycling racing and triathlon since 1995. Two highlights were in 2005 when Kelly completed the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, and in 2007, when he became the Ironman 70.3 World Champion in his age group. Competing in sports has taken us on most of our travels where we have met many wonderful people. Sport is really a lifestyle choice, as is clearly evident when you see 60-, 70-, and 80-year olds out there doing the same thing you're doing. How inspiring! That about sums it up for me.
