Shirley's Story

I can barely remember high school graduation. Friends tell me, while waiting for the Archer bus to take us downtown, we hitched a ride instead on a newspaper truck. The driver dropped us off in front of the Opera House, the sight of our graduation ceremony. Now I'm a Lyric Opera season subscriber. Who da thunk? I went on to college and graduate school. I wish I took high school more seriously, especially Spanish class. I'd do anything to be multilingual now. I was a smart kid who played dumb. After college, I moved to the Lincoln Park area; traveled; briefly lived in Europe; became a medical professional; married one of my patients (and 17 years later mercifully divorced); had 2 daughters. My family moved from the southwest side of Chicago years ago and I currently live in the bland and boring western suburbs. In my travels, every place seemed better then Chicago. As we often learn better late then never, the grass is not greener. My eldest daughter attends Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. My youngest is still in high school and will also be a music performance major in college. After 20 years of employment at the same institution, I was released from servitude in 2003 and, thanks to Cook County tax payers, I'm collecting a substantial pension for the rest of my life. I now work in a self-employed capacity. It's still work but at least it's not for The Man. A few years ago, I had an opportunity to visit Kennedy High School when my daughter was involved in an orchestral event there. There were metal detec...Expand for more
tors at the entrance. Students wore uniforms: navy bottoms, white shirts and ID's around their necks. It was a bit surreal watching my daughter perform on stage in the same auditorium where I once had Study Hall and took my ACT exam. By the way, I got an "11" on the math portion of the ACT thank you very much Mr. Koski. I recall watching a performance in that auditorium called "Up With People". I still know the words to their theme song: "up, up with people; you see them where ever you go...blah, blah, blah". Why I remember this sick bit of propaganda I'll never know, possibly the horror of it that I just didn't realize at the time. At the risk of sounding a snob, I must admit a fair amount of embarrassment at having attended Kennedy. It wasn't that way when I was a student...metal detectors, uniforms...now it has under-achievers written all over it. I'm still close to a few people I knew from Kennedy and even from grammar school at St. Sym's. We traveled divergent paths but make every effort to get together yearly. Jan Edgeworth, Barb Frystak, Faith Leginski, Patricia Reagan...these are the folks who knew me when I ironed my hair, ratted my hair, frizzed my hair, styled my hair, and now pluck the grey hairs from. There are a few people I'm curious as to their whereabouts: Mary Kolimas, Pam Kimotek and a guy I went steady with for about 24 hours, Richard Dvorak I believe his name was. We had the same birth date, October 22nd. I was so stupid back then I pray he doesn't remember me. And no, I'm not looking to hook up!
