Shirley's Story
The most surprising thing that has happened to me was to contract and survive Guillian-Barre Syndrome. I was hospitalized for 8 months in 2006. I was on life support for 6 1/2 months and was totally paralized for almost 1 year. I began walking again after 1 year of being bedridden. My heart stopped several times but I never saw that white light, thank God! It wasn't my time I guess.
My husband and I have been married for 30 years this year and he was an amazing caretaker while I was incapacitated. My sister, Karen, stayed with me every day Mon-Fri for a year ...Expand for more
so Larry and my daughter, Missy, could work once I was out of intensive care. Missy also picked up the slack of sitting with me so that I was only alone during the late night hours all those months. The 3 of them had a regular schedule established. If they had not been with me, I know I would not be here today.
I have recovered pretty well but am still not working. After 23 years in banking and 11 years in insurance, I'm going to get stronger and enjoy life.
I'm looking forward to seeing classmates at our 40th reunion this year. Let me hear from you.
