Dava's Story

I moved up to Mongaup Valley near the end of 8th grade. Was friends at first with Cathy Knapp, Judy Lohmeyer, Joanne Silverman, Fran Wasserlauf, then also MICKI DONALDSON, June Coney, Pam Newman, Mookie (Monica) Molnar and the others in that crowd. The guys were Charlie Hindley (Micki's cousin), Mike McLaughlin, Richie Hendrickson (who was always my big crush back then) and more. We moved to our house on Plank Road in April/May 1963, and sadly moved down to East Paterson, NJ in November 65 when in 10th grade. I was given a great going away party by Joanne (Graybak??) she lived further up 17B just past the Valley towards Smallwood. I have never forgotten it! I HATED moving away from Monticello, WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY LIVING THERE ALWAYS. We moved first to NJ in Nov 65 then down to Maryland in summer of 1966. Dated and broke up with Stanley Shook and Richie Hendrickson, got married to a local Maryland boy, John Ansell Jr., who went to Vietnam and was killed while I was pregnant with our son John III. Through the years I worked rather hard maintaining a home for my son and I in Gaitersburg, Maryland and his private school education. From my first trip out to New Mexico in 1965 while stll living in Mongaup Valley I always knew I was supposed to live out here. The day finally came in 1994 when I bought my home in Angel Fire (northern New Mexico - ski/snow country) and then moved out in July 1995. I have had the privilage of serving as the Executive Director of the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial in Angel Fire, New Mexico. Upon resigning in 2000 after a serious motorcycle accident I opened my own women's boutiques (2) in Santa Fe and Angel Fire where I lived up until 3 years ago. Upon becoming engaged to remarry I then moved to Albuquerque, NM to live with my then fiance, now husband, Larry Cole. He is a Dr. here at UNM. We have 2 grandchildren... a granddaughter from his daughter, a grandson from my son. Larry is somewhat world renowned in his field and we seem to travel the world rather frequently. My best memories growing up are always of living in Mongaup Valley and going to school at Monticello. I remember going to Fun-Fare rollar skating, skiing out on White Lake, hanging out in town, parties ...Expand for more
in the woods drinking Colt 45 and whatever else we could get our hands on. WOW! Oh...I do still work, though only part-time as a Realtor here in Albuquerque/Santa Fe. We have 4 dogs...2 Siberian Huskies, a Rhodesian and a Rottweiler (all big). 3 were mine when marrying...you don't live alone out in the woods of northern New Mexico without dogs...they do help to keep the bears away. I rode my Harley after the accident for a few years but then sold it to open up my stores. I only starting riding. motorcycles in 1988 out of the blue basically after a friend took me for a ride and I loved it. Here it is February 2013.....changes to life...we sold home in Albuquerque and moved up to home in Angel Fire, NM. My husband Larry retired from UNM. We now have 4 grandchildren....2 in Hartford, Ct and 2 in Rockville, Md. We no longer have our Rhodesian Ridgeback and our 2nd Husky as they have both passed away but our 3rd dog is now a miniature German Shepard/Rottweiler mix! In the past 2/3/4 years we have done some travel....over to Sweden on business and also staying up at The Ice Hotel above the Arctic Circle...that was my 59th birthday...and then on to Vienna, Austria, also business. Back and forth to the UK where Larry is from ..this past August we came home slowly on the Queen Mary...rather different from a fast flight! Lots if trips around the US.....to see the kids in the east and others n the west. We drive to Denver a few times a year for friends and also to Houston, Tx. We have this "feeling" that within2 to 3 years we will move east to b nearer to kids and grandchildren..... Our home in Angel Fire, which was originally mine before we married, is within minutes from the ski slopes. We just moved up there weeks ago. Though retired from UNM now, Larry is still doing much consulting world-wide and traveling.....i tend to live with my passports kept in a handy place....fortunately we have a wonderful dog/house sitter we have had for years in Albuquerque who is willing to come up to Angel Fire when we travel. As we r doing NOW on a driving trip back from the east coast going thru Kansas.... I remember so many of you from my days there at Monticello.....I see names and smile..... Always, Dava.
