Sig's Story

A recap after 40 years... After Lakeport I went to University of Guelph, where after two years I took some years off then returned to complete a degree in horticulture. Upon graduating in 1977 I began work for a company in Dundas that did right of way maintenance work for electric utilities, railroads, counties, etc. I continued to live in Guelph where I met my wife Katharine Weinmann, who grew up in Fort Erie. We married in 1980. The Dundas company I worked for was bought by a Calgary firm, which re-located us to the Edmonton area for the start of the 1981 year. The enticement to move west was great as I was offered the position of general manager for a new company that was formed from their previous western operations and the Dundas company. I left that position in 1985 and worked for an electric utility for 10 years before leaving them and starting my own consulting company. Overall my career has gone well. I get to do work that is both interesting and challenging. Rather than getting into details here, if you're curious do a Google Search on Siegfried Guggenmoos. work and can't imagine I'll ever fully retire. My wife received a masters degree from Wilfrid Laurier. She works for the school board as a staff consultant providing leadership training for principals and other staff. We have no children, just dogs and horses. Yep, I've become a cowboy. Some of my friends might argue that and suggest a redneck would be a better description. Hobbies include hunting, field trial competitions for bird dogs, training bird dogs, skiing. The field trial competitions are done on horseback as you see in the picture. Growing up I was fascinated with horses but had no exposure to them given the nature of farming in the Niagara peninsula. Moving to Alberta and discovering horseback field trials for bird dogs presented the perfect opportunity to become involved with horses. My parents still live in Port Dalhousie and Katharine's family is still in Fort Erie. That proximity sure helps when we return for visits. With just a half an hour of travel time between parents it's easy to visit both families without a lot of strees on us and neither family feeling short-changed.
