Charlie's Story

I hope old friends remember me for being a kind light hearted person, that cared for all he came into contact with. I always wanted to be a Marine when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a not a good idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. Although in the 1970's, it was not a popular thing to do, I thought it was right to serve my country and fellow Americans. When I got home from Viet Nam, my fellow Americans thought I was an evil person, and displayed great contempt and hatred towards me and my fellow G.I.s. I have been mugged by a group of Americans, I have had several different items thrown at me, and I have been called just about everything that is dirty or negative, in the book, and some names that aren't in the book. I spent 10 years in the Marines. My job was being a CH-46 Helicopter Crew Chief. Basically, I was the Flight Engineer, Load Master, in-flight Repairman, the Rear Eyes for the Pilots and sometimes the Co-Pilot, when one of the Pilots needed to sleep, and I was the Mechanic who maintained my Aircraft. I performed the Pre-Flight and Post-Flight Inspections. I filled all required aircraft resevoires, and most of the mechanical maintenance needed. I washed the Aircraft, and trained others in my job. I got out of the Marines in 1980, and did some roofing, concrete work, and sold cars at Don Young Ford in Walnut Creek. On July 1st of 1981, while working at Don Young Ford, I was kidnapped at gun point, tied up in a bunker by Ygnacio Valley Road... I escaped on my own, and then put in my 30 day notice. On July 31st of 1981, I entered into a 4 year apprenticeship with the Steamfitters Union. In October of 1985, the love of my life, was diagnosed with stage 4 EB of Hodgekins Lymphoma. She was a wonderful display of modern medical technology, when she went from being a terminal cancer patient to being a healthy survivor. We got married in June of 1994, and are still together today. My wife Nancy, is also a Clayton Valley High Alum. In 1994, my best friend asked me to come to work for him as vice president of construction. In 1996, he made me 1/3 owner and only partner. We eventually grew our 2 man company into a 14 personnel in the office and 108 field employees. This all came to an abrupt end on September 11th, 2001. I remained with our Company until March 31st of 2003, when I retired. I now spend my days on the computer, golfing, world traveling and my wife and I belong to the Masonic Family. We have both been to the top of our fraternities. For those of you who are not aware of the California Free Masons... It is made up of several fraternal families. I am a Master Mason (3rd Degree), a Scottish Rite Mason (32nd Degree), a York Rite Mason, Knight Templar (equivelent to a 32nd Degree), a Shriner (the guys with the Fezzes, an Amaranth member and a Past President of the Pittsburg 3-5-7 Club. I have been the grand puhba of all these fraternities. My wife Nancy is also a Past President of the Pittsburg 3-5-7 Club, and a Past President of the Amaranth in Pittsburg. We try to travel to Europe every 2 to 3 years. My favorite country is ...Expand for more
Germany, with Scotland coming in a close second. We always try to get other couples to go with us, as traveling to us is more fun with our friends, than alone. My biggest surprise has got to be my Wife Nancy. She is my best friend, and the person to whom I most admire. Aside from her staying with me all these years, I believe she is the most kind hearted, intelligent individual, that loves the world and all who inhabit it, and she does all she can to make the world a better place. She was the one who inspired me to become a Mason, so that we could give to the many charities of the Masonic Families, not only our financial assistance, but also our time and labor. If I were to sum up my life, it would be, "Charlie is a happy man who has done his best for his fellow humans." The wildest thing I ever did in School, was after being expelled from Mt. Diablo School District (in 10th grade), I attended Monte Vista High in Danville, the week before Summer Vacation started, I, along with 13 other students and our substitute Teacher smoked marijuana in the class room. Our sub at that time was no other than the same Mr. Rosenthal, who was arrested every year for planting Pot Seeds on San Francisco's City Hall lawn. As far as my ideas for heroes... I try to live up to my old Partner Arturo's examples. He too is a Mason, and the closest I have ever seen in my life to what I think Jesus Christ was like. Like Arturo, I believe that all the Men and Women who have given of their lives for this country are heroes. When I was young, I didn't get into the Mod Styles, be it hair, clothes or possessions. I'm still that way. The best job I ever had was, while in the Marines I took a night time job as a Security Guard, and my site was the Fender Rhodes Factory in Fullerton, California. I got to play guitars, and keyboards, (I could have played drums but didn't know how), I even played on 2 Starcaster Guitars that were bound for Eric Clapton. The only trophy of sorts that is hanging on my wall, is the ball and scorecard, from the game where i got a hole in one at Diablo Creek Golf Course. If I had one do over, I think it would be to go back being a good, studious student and not let my sixth grade teacher Mr. Smith from Clayton Valley Elementry, actions turn me off to school. He was an incompetent teacher who was unhappy with his lot in life, and took it out on any one who questioned him, or his authority. My oldest friend is Phillip Johnson, we have been friends since we were six. The first day Phillip moved into our neighborhood in Danville, CALIF. I beat him up so badly, that I admired his stamina. Since then, he has caused me so much physical pain, from nuggies to booby twisters, trips, and hair pulls (either on head or chest), he is still doing it and we golf every Sunday together. I might mention that his wife and mine are best friends too. I think the biggest surprise my former fellow students would find about me is that I am 6'-2" and weigh about 300 lbs. When I joined the Marines at 16, I was 5'-9" and weighed 128 lbs. I often relax by playing my Piano or one of my Guitars.
