Sindie's Story
After graduation in June of 1968 from high school at K-Town, I attended college at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. I received a Bachelor's degree in Special Education in May of 1972. I was awarded a senior year scholarship in the area of orthopedically impaired. I got my first job after graduation at Dr. J. P. Lord School in Omaha, NE.
My mother died of cancer the first month of my teaching, and my younger sister, Lori, died of cancer Thanksgiving weekend of 1994. My older sister and I are both part of the "Sister Study" research for breast cancer.
I went back for my graduate degree in Reading at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I graduated in August of 1976, and became engaged to Jerry that same summer. We were married in December of 1976. I taught 12 years at Dr. J. P. Lord until they moved the program to Hartman Elementary School. It was much easier to mainstream students in this environment. I taught 20 years at Hartman working with kindergarten through 6th grade. Special Olympics was one of my favorite activities. I am the Head of Delegation for my team which includes my orthopedically impaired students former and present. It also includes the students...Expand for more
at Dr. J. P. Lord School. The last 4 years of my teaching career I became a traveling teacher training the building special education staff to work with the orthopedically impaired. I traveled to high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools. Many new friendships were made.
After I retired in June of 2006, I substituted for those teachers and buildings I use to travel to and help. I tutor in my home and finally have time to oil paint. Traveling and oil painting are my 2 favorite things. My oldest daughter is a physical therapist in Minneapolis, another is a first grade teacher, and the youngest is a recruiter for traveling nurses and CNA's . My husband Jerry is an attorney. He is also a 2 time cancer survivor. For Valentine's and our 30th anniversary we went to Israel for 2 weeks. It was a dream trip.
It has been awhile since I updated this. We now have 8 grandchildren as of 2021. I have been working part time as a resource teacher at a private school for several years. Much better than substitute teaching.
My dad, Lt. Col. I.J. Harris, died at the age of 95. He had served in the Air Force as a pilot for over 30 years. At Ramstein he was the base exchange officer.
