Sonia's Story
I graduated from Mount Vernon High in 1984, and got a degree in Communications from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. I lived and worked in Portland for a bit after graduation before moving to Seattle. I became an expert in the food service industry while I schlepped about Western Washington, trying for my ultimate job. ESPN never called, so I took a job at KBRO-AM Radio in Bremerton, WA in '89. I got hired as a disc jockey on KMPS-FM in Seattle in '93, then moved into the marketing department for the station a few months later, leaving my hopes of being the next great DJ behind in exchange for full-time work, regular hours, and benefits. I married Joel Highet in '94. We moved to Los Angeles in '96 when I took a job with KPWR-FM in L.A. as their Director of Interactive Operations. I changed companies and worked with ABC Radio in L.A. (KLOS-FM & KABC-AM) as their Website manager. I moved to the ABC stations in San Francisco (KGO-AM & KSFO-AM) in 1999 to work as the Director of New Media. s an Account Manager. I worked for the Southern California-based online company from the basement of our home, talking to radio stations all over the U.S. about their websites and digital platforms. Our daughter was born in '03.
For fun, we travel a lot throughout the Northwest -- camping, skiing, and hanging with the kids and our families, many of whom still live in the Seattle/M.V. area. While I don't play music like I used to (and I miss it), it's still a big part of my life -- listening to it and attending several concerts a year with Joel and/or my sister Darcy. I continue to be a big fan of sports (go Seahawks!), I belong to a book club, and enjoy socializing with friends -- those from M.V. include Bridget, Kristin, and the Oldows. (I keep in touch with out-of-state friends Rebecca, Michaelann, Ross, Gary, and Cindy.) I volunteer at my childrens' school, coach my son's soccer team, drive the kidlettes to their various activities, and try to work-out on occasion. That's about as exciting as it gets. Nothing exotic nor sexy, but life is good.
