Sonny's Story

Life I gotta say that life is good. It's amazing what happens when you get liberated from the obstacles that you place on yourself within your own mind and by doing so ovecome the ones that others try to put in your path. Being able to wake up every morning doing what you love is a gift from God that cannot be described. When I told people that I was going back to school they said I was nuts. For a minute there, I started believeing them. Fortunately, I did what I wanted despite what they said and what I almost told my self. Sometimes ya just gotta answer the call that is placed on your life. For me it was seminary and graduate school. Who knows what it is for you...Whatever it is, life is too short to listen to your detractors. As Alice Walker, a great womanist author puts it, "You must do the work that your soul must have." I have...I encourage you to do the same. College Seems like I've been in school forever. After East, I attended UIC and by the grace of God and friends in the right places I finished with a Bachelor's in Biology. After some time in the work force (unrelated to biology -teaching tennis as a matter of fact) I went back to school for a Master of Arts in Teaching at National Louis University in Chicago. Upon completion of my course work I went back to teach science at our beloved alma mater Proviso East. After about four years of teaching, I ventured out of the state of Illinois to attend seminary at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology @ Virginia Union University. (That's a mouthful ain't it?) I finished there in May 2007 with a Master of Divinity. Yup...I'm a glutton for punishment. September of 2007 I began a program at Union Theological Seminary-Presbyterian School of Christian Education that will finish in May 2008. I will have earned a Master of Theology. This program is an intermediary step in preparation for a Ph. D. program. I am presently applying to three schools and wil...Expand for more
l know my status in March 2008. Keep your fingers crossed. No...I'm not hiding from the real world by going to school for so long. I eventually want to be a professor of theolgoy and ethics/ethnic studies in a seminary or university. Workplace I am soooo glad that I obtained some skills and trades that are transportable. I don't know if people knew, but after college I didn't want to spend my days stuck in a laboratory. Fortunately, God sent me a mentor...people from Maywood might know him. He was also a graduate of East but 10 years before me. He taught me the business of teaching tennis. I learned well and quickly built up a large following in the north west suburbs of Chicago.(Schaumburg/Palatine/Barrington area) I know that this is the last sport that people from high school would associate me with but what the heck, it was fun, paid well and kept me in shape. SKILL #1 I left the tennis industry in the late 90's to teach science at Proviso East. In order to do so, I had to earn a degree and certification to teach middle and high school from National Louis University. Although I was the teacher, I really believe the kids that sat in the same seats as we did taught me more that I did them. SKILL #2 I have since moved to Richmond, VA to go to school. It is common knowledge that students are poor. Take it from me, that is not a stereotype. Fortunately, all of that experience and education has paid off and prevented my wife and I from eating tuna out of the can the entire time we have been here. I was able to use my tennis knowledge and ability to get a job as a tennis professional at a tennis club called Atlantic Coast Athletic Club. They know that I'm in school and allow me to maintain flexible hours. And when I'm really hard up, I tutor math and science and have even considered substitute teaching. Hey, it beats selling multiple pints of blood and selling donations at the local fertility clinic.
