Sonya's Story

Life I got married right out of high school to Bert Brehaut, attended one year of college in Tennessee and three years in Abilene, Texas, to get my B.S.Ed. We returned to Saskatchewan and I got a teaching job in Melville, starting in 1970. After one year there, I taught in Glaslyn one year, Unity two years and Esterhazy six years, a total of ten years fulltime ending in 1981. I separated from Bert in the summer of 1975. I met Garry Seman, another teacher (also farmer) in September and we married in 1977. I substitute-taught, did volunteer work and held down the fort at the farm while Garry was at school. I enjoyed gardening- veggies, flowers, and fruit trees- and even learned to make wine from scratch. I tried ceramics. I took community college classes. Later I began serious volunteer work with the Canadian Diabetes Assocation (CDA), helped to start new local chapter, and then became active at provincial level. This was a result of developing Type 1 diabetes myself in 1981. In 2000, after twenty-three years with Garry, I 0separated once again and moved to Yorkton. I worked at the Academy of Learning for a couple years, at the same time gaining some computer skills. When my employer got a group benefit package established, I got an insulin pump because the cost of my monthly pump supplies would be covered by the plan. The pump changed my life. One month later, I was laid off. Three months later, I was employed as an assistant by two Investors Group consultants, and later worked as assistant only to Terry ...Expand for more
Lakin. I began a new relationship with Jim Ennis, whom I got to know through CDA. After over five years of legal struggles on my part trying to get a divorce, Garry passed away due to a very bad heart. On October 7, 2006, Jim and I got married in Truro, Nova Scotia. We had a small wedding at the home of our good friends, the Kaiser, who were also our witnesses. We had six other guests. We enjoyed a few days touring with our friends before returning home. I never had any children, but had always wanted to have a family; therefore, I am very much enjoying Jim's two daughters, their children and grandchildren. We travel to Medicine Hat to visit them a few times each year. I have always loved dogs. In the summer of 2008 Jim and I adopted a seven-year-old English Cocker Spaniel from a family who was moving from Yorkton. He was a sweet adorable dog, always at or under our feet, sometimes to our chagrin. His big brown eyes said so much. Loved him dearly. I retired from the work world in February of 2014. Jim had previously retired as Yorkton's Fire Chief in 2003. In 2009 we made our first trip to Bucerias, Nayarit, Mexico, near Puerto Vallarta. We have travelled there ever winter since, for varying lengths of time because we adopted another dog, Boo, at six months of age, from the Yorkton SPCA in 2009 after Levi passed due to congestive heart failure. Boo keeps us somewhat active. We try to walk her every day. We have a wonderful friend Sherry who looks after her when we travel to Mexico. We are blessed.
