Mike's Story
I hope the world is treating you well. In 2013, retired from IBM and now working on my bucket list....which continues to grow. Since high school (Started at Castro Valley High, parents moved in the middle of my Junior year to Lynbrook)....well
Like a good number of you, went to a junior college first - De Anza....made the dean's list three quarters running. 1.9, 1.2 and .9....the dean asked what I was doing and told me that my student deferment for the draft was going to be suspended, with draft number 25, not good....Rex Pendleton and I joined the Navy. Spent 16 months in Asia Pacific, in most countries in that part of the world....Ran into Joe Eick and Rex in the Philippines on several occasions.....
Returned to De Anza (big mistake) the previous quarters really hammered the GPA....did well enough to get into San Diego State (yep a party school), but did graduate. Took an internship that took me to Cali, Colombia, Spanish when I arrived, Una mas cerveza and Donde esta un bano.....figured could not go wrong with that combination.
Returned to Modesto ...Expand for more
CA, where I worked and went to school picking up a masters in International Marketing and met my now wife, Jeanie - married in 1980. Two children, Pat who lives in San Ramon, and Katy who lives in Silicon Valley.
Lived the first couple of years in San Diego, transferred to Northern California in 1983 via Foodmaker.
Spent the next 30 years with Foodmaker,
Price Waterhouse Consulting (picked up more than a quarter million miles on United, American, and 100,000 miles on Delta - lived on airplanes) - when Jeanie came to me one day and said, "I know you love this life style, you can continue it with your next wife",
PacTel Cellular which became AirTouch (employee 189 when I started, left when we had grown to 12,000 through a number of acquisitions - great ride),
Then a brief time with Chiron (interesting company, wrong person for the wrong time - if you can tell, did not like my tenure here),
Then retiring from IBM, where I was able to see the world with the projects I worked on - great place to be from.
Now retired - with too many things to do.....
