Eugene's Story

Life I was born on October 21, 1950 in Culver City, California and lived in Inglewood until December, 1957. At that time we then moved to 2120 West 111th Street, where I attended Century Park Elementary School (until 6/62), Henry Clay Junior High School (until 6/65), and finally, George Washington High School (graduated 6/68). I then attended UCLA (Biology) for one year, and being in way over my head there, went up to UC Santa Barbara (graduated 6/72 with a B.A. in Cellular and Organismal Biology). Attempting (and failing) to get into any medical or dental schools (due to my less-than-stellar 2.86 GPA at UCLA and UCSB), I worked for a year in L.A. (construction), and then as a hospital file-clerk up north in Daly City, CA. For some reason, I got accepted to the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, and started there in 9/73, with a B.S. Pharmacy in 6/76 and a Pharm.D. in 6/77. I then did a one-year hospital pharmacy residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago Medical Center, where I met my future wife, Anita DeSouza. After completion of the residency I worked at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) in Los Angeles for 5 years as a clinical pharmacist on the 5th floor, home of both the medical- (MICU) and respiratory-intensive care units, adult medicine, and cardiology units. Fun. I also taught MICU clerkships for the USC School of Pharmacy while at CSMC. Alas, the blush of joy at this first 'real' job faded as I discovered I liked medical writing. I applied for, and got, a medical writing position being offered by Adis International Ltd. in Auckland, New Zealand, and my wife Anita and I moved there in November, 1983. In 1986 I became head of the group of writers creating the Adis 'Drug Evaluations' for their international journal Drugs. The next year I became Editor of the journal Drugs, and eventually became head of the entire group of Adis international journals (Drugs, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Sports Medicine, Drug Safety, PharmacoEconomics, ...Expand for more
etc.). Got to travel alot, and was fortunate enough to see Japan, Europe, and Brazil on several occasions. Reality intruded into the fantasy job when our daughter Ellen Gwen was born on August 9, 1992. Suddenly glamorous trips away from home and long hours at the office meant being away from my wife AND daughter. I resigned my position at Adis in March, 1996 and spent 8 months taking care of our daughter full-time while Anita worked full-time. I was rehired at Adis in December, 1996 as the Editor (again) of the journal Drugs, where I remained until July, 1998. Then, Adis was bought out by a European publishing company, and my role at Adis changed back to that of a medical writer (the original role I had when I was hired 15 years previously!). It didn't work out and I quit Adis in January, 1999. Fortunately, I was able to land a job with the Harvey Whitney Books Co. in Cincinnati, OH in May, 1999 as Assistant Editor to their journal The Annals of Pharmacotherapy, where I continue to this day as a medical editor. However, if anyone thinks of moving from overseas to the USA, or vice-versa, please have your heads examined! It is quite a business to pack up and move across the ocean once you have a family. In 1983 it was only Anita and I and very few possessions. With a 7-year old daughter moving back with us, the number of possessions (and hassles) increased a million-fold (but I never exaggerate!). Anyway, we now live in Cincinnati. I continue with medical editing, and it's hard to believe I haven't practiced real pharmacy in over 22 years. I enjoy genealogy, baseball, music, Laurel & Hardy, and especially talking about times long ago (e.g. school days, roommates and things that are so far back in my memory it's hard to believe that they actually really happened). So, if you're reading this (and are still awake after all this dry narrative), please let me know. I'd love to talk to you and find out how you're doing. Thanks for taking the time to read this!
