Spencer's Story

Updated: 10/2013 I attended two different high schools my senior year: Rock Island, Ill. and Mount Vernon, Va. Returned to California for undergrad at UCSB. Graduated in 1967 and went to the Harvard Business School for an MBA. In 1969 I started work at Hewlett-Packard after grad school. In 1971 I got a second masters in industrial engineering from Stanford, while working at HP in Palo Alto. Moved to Santa Rosa with HP in 1973 and stayed with them until 2001. Did consulting for about three years, then in early 2005 became the finance and administration manager for the Sonoma County Water Agency. I retired from full time work on May 1, 2013. I volunteer as a mentor to and occasional investor in start up companies. I volunteer for the local chapter of SCORE and on the United Way of the Wine Country Board, and VITA tax prep program. I have been married to Sandy since 1974. We have three kids, who all are finished with college and gainfully employed in San Diego and Reno. Recently, Jennifer, the oldest, finished a Masters from UC Berkley in Cyber-security. She is now working on the customer facing software used by United Airlines. On November 11, 2007, our son Martin and his wife had our first grandchild, who they named Ressa after my mother. In the meantime, our other two kids have married, and we now have a total of 8 grandkids -- four births and four that came with the marriages. Keeping up with their lives via email and Facebook takes up a good deal of each week for Sandy. Sandy was a high school math teacher at Ursuline, an all-girls Catholic school here in Santa Rosa. She enjoyed not having the crowd control issues of a public high school environment and especially enjoyed teaching the young women. As the department head she kept the math classes single gender, while most of the departments were coed with the Catholic boys school which shared an adjacent campus. She found that the girls do much better in math when they don't have to contend with the boys. Many of her students have gone on to successful math and technology related fields. I was a soccer referee for over thirty years. Not chasing kids any more, but spending time instructing and mentoring referees. I am also an assessor for the USSF referee program around northern California. On a recent trip to Barcelona, Spain Sandy and I went to see an FC Barcelona home match. A real bucket list item shared with 100,000 of my closest friends, just as Covid was making headlines!...Expand for more
We were there in late February and neither of us was infected with the virus - lucky I guess. Also lucky we returned home before the doors were closed even to citizens returning from Europe. My other hobbies are fly fishing, skiing, reading, and an occasional poker game with friends from HP or bridge with Sandy. We've both started playing a little golf again after a 20+ year layoff from the game. My goal is to shoot 90 or under and I have a long way to go. My only obsession is wine...when you live in wine country it only seems right. My cellar is full at about 1500 bottles. We completed a major remodel including adding a 16 x 9 foot wine cellar in 2013. It takes a lot of work to keep the inventory accurate and consume enough to make room for new purchases. A trip in the Spring of 2013 to Spain's wine county (Rioja) added a few bottles and an appreciation for Tempranillo. The search goes on...Tuscany and Sicily were added to the favorites list on a trip in 2017. Another trip to Priorate area of Spain this year added the Clos d'Lobac wine club to my list of favorites. Locally, Ridge Winery and Rochiolli are my two go to wineries. Summer of 2014 we traveled to Alaska starting in Fairbanks and ending up in Sitka via trains and boats and planes. Three weeks is barely enough time to see Alaska's beauty and enjoy its wilderness. In June 2015 we traveled to Paris, Normandy, Burgundy, Provence, and the French Alps. On the way home we stopped in Washington DC and enjoyed the 4th of July with a tour of the Capital Building, seeing the Declaration of Independence, and of course the great fireworks. Summer of 2019 included a family reunion at Eagle Crest Resort near Redmond Oregon. All our kids and my sister and her kids were together for a week. Golf, food, fishing, walks by the river, and lots of funny stories ( a few new "adventures" our kids had that they kept from us for all these years). New York City was worth seeing, but we probably won't go back. 2022 we traveled to northern Spain, Portugal, Berlin, Budapest, the Danube, Oberammergau, and Munich. 2023 nearly kept up with 2022 - Scotland, London, Paris, and Beaune in Burgundy. When we came home we repacked and left after two days for a drive to Yellowstone, where we met up with my sister and her husband. Early May was a great time to see the park and its wildlife. Life is full and filled with the joy of family, friends, contribution to the community, adventure, and good health.
