Stan's Story

When I attended High School, I was really interested in becoming a professional musician (I played the trumpet). Unfortunately, I did not have all of the background and after a bit of college, I had a reality check and decided that direction was probably not going to work. After a year or so, of looking around, I decided to join the Navy to 'see the World.' I became a Hospital Corpsman (a medic), because that job was in best alignment with my 1970's pacifist values. Nevertheless, being a Corpsman had me working with both Navy and Marines at various duty stations and ships. I liked taking care of people so much that I decided to go to medical school to add some skills. I was a "weekend warrior" Navy Reservist while I attended the Seattle Central Community College and the University of Washington, back home in Seattle. While I attended SCCC, I met a very beautiful lady, whom I married a couple of years later. She never got a honeymoon, because after graduation, we were headed off to Nashville, Tennessee (for my med school and for the rest of her college). Medical School was at a historically Black higher learning institution, where I received teaching from wonderful instructors and professors. I also broadened my perspectives a bit. After graduation, I ...Expand for more
returned to the Navy as a physician, and over the years and various assignments, progressed from a shipboard doctor, to a pathologist, to a forensic pathologist / medical examiner. My son was born at one of those assignments, on a Marine Base located way, way out in the desert. He plays piano (and is beginning flute), is going up for a second degree black belt in TaeKwonDo and is rapidly becoming an accomplished guy. Well, I retire from the military this year. I came into the service in 1978 (and with the exception of a small bit of time), was either in the service or somehow associated with it until 2009. The military has been challenging, but also has been rewarding. For example, I have lived, been stationed or visited on every continent with the exceptions of Antarctica and South America (which I hope to visit before its all over). My favorite assignment was in Italy, where my family lived on the side of an active volcano in Sicily, a land of castles rising from hills covered with orange and olive trees. However, the military makes you move every few years, and while that is okay at first, eventually we like to put down roots. Right how, I have to decide whether to stay in San Diego, or move to some other place in California, Oregon or Washington.
