Stanley's Story

Stanley Gresham Feb 08 2011 | General Missing July 2001 Stanley passed away after a long battle with complications of diabetes. His funeral visitation was more of a party than a wake. He would have liked that. Surrounded by the many friends he had made over the years filled 3 rooms at Mayes Ward. I am sure he was looking down and smiling as the place filled with people of the various loves and interests that had involved himself in through his 51 years. Fishing, hunting, boating, racing, rodeoing, 4wheeling, anything and everything that sounded like fun. Life to Stanley was one big party. In his last days he told me that he had lived a good life, done many wonderful things and had a great time doing them. His only regret was not getting to do some of them again. He is survived by two fabulous sons, Hal and Jake, both Sprayberry graduates. They are his true legacy. He was never more proud of any other accomplishment as he was those two boys who have grown and lived their lives in a manner that did and still does leave a tribute to a father that they loved and left them too soon. And me, a wife that loved him...Expand for more
through good and bad, and there was both in the 24 years we were married. I miss him so much, He was the one love of my life. Many days I fumed over his refusal to grow up and stop living like it was still 1969. He never lost that sense of boyish adventure much to my chagrin at times. But as his kids and Don Henry stood by his bedside he wanted to make one of his last statement to family and friends "never put off what you dream of, what you want to do, life is short and it is to be lived and enjoy each day like it was your last, for way too soon it will be your last and the saddest thing would have been for me to lay here and have wished I had done something and never did." He never forgot his friends and his days at Sprayberry, although I am not too sure that Sprayberry didn't want to forget him, especially one English lit teacher. Which is ironic in true Stanley style as his son now teaches High School Englsh. He always looked forward to the reunions, so I hope when you get together you will remember him with fondness. Lift a long neck, a Jack or a diet Pepsi and say well done Stan, rest in peace. Dianne Gresham
