Stanley's Story
Life
Joined the Army in August of 72 and stayed for almost 21 years. Started in the Infantry for 6 years then worked in the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical warfare field until I retired. Hated math in school but had to learn the fine art of using algebraic and trigonomic equations not to mention a little calculus. No, a lot of calculus to do my job. After all the work Mrs. Samuels put into trying to teach me algebra I think now I would make her proud! When I retired I went back to school and worked full time to upgrade a few skills I had learned over the years. I currently work as a Territory Sales Manager in Ontario, Canada for a U.S. based company in Atlanta, Georgia.
I have 6 children from a previous marriage. Three boys and three girls. Three are currently in school working on their college education. I have 3 grandchildren, 2 grandsons and a granddaughter. And like all grandparents I try to spoil them.
School
Hmmmmm As for the girl I had the biggest crush on, I wouldn't want to embarass her by saying who she was but she sat about two seats up from me at the front of our class in history. Just to shy to ever talk to her.
As for a teacher that inspired me I would have to say that was Mr. Humphries in biology. He made learning fun.
Worst part of school? I would have to say was Senior Day.... that is until it was my turn.... Then it was the greatest!
Military
I joined the Army on 16 August 1972 as ...Expand for more
an infantryman. I spent basic training and advanced training at Fort Polk, Louisiana and went to Fort Benning, GA for airborne training. I caught double pneaumonia and could not complete the training so they shipped me to Neu-Ulm, Germany where I stayed until June of 76 at which time I was sent to Fort Carson, CO.
I Re-enlisted and switched career fields and found my niche in the area of Chemical, Biological and Nuclear warfare. I had to work hard to learn the math skills needed to perform in that field and over time I became pretty good. Once I completed that training course I went back to Germany for 3 years and went to Fort McClellen, AL where I taught for two years at the NBC school. At the end of my time there, the Army found in it's wisdom to send me to the U.S. Army Recruiting School, I came home to recruit in Shreveport and East Texas. That was without a doubt my hardest and worst assignment in my career. I hated that job and was glad to leave at the end of 3 years. Many parents still had fresh memories of Vietnam and sometimes they would tell me on no uncertain terms where I could go.
Other than a couple of combat tours I could not complain. I was able to accomplish most of my career goals which I am very proud of. I Retired on 1 February 1993 and wouldn't trade most of my experienes for anything.
I do miss things though, mostly the soldiers and my friends who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
