Stanley's Story

Hi All - I thought I was such a healthy guy at 81 YO. Well, I sought of was. Fortunately for me, I never smoked or drank liquor in my life. Was built thin and took good care of myself even while working everyday at my business here in CA. Then just 3 months ago at the end of May, I got really sick and had two major operations within a week. During the .second operation, I actually died on the operating table suffering from septic shock, but fortunately was resuscitated and brought back. It has now been appx. 10 weeks that I've been recuperating and starting to feel a little better. The doctors thought I would never make it back, that's how close I got. They now say it will take about 6 months to a year to fully recover that terrible experience. After working for 36 years in my electronics business I felt it (my dying) was a sign from the guy upstairs, that maybe now really is the time to RETIRE. And retire I did. To say thank you to the employees who worked for me for many years, I gave them the business to keep and run, said thanks and quietly left the office with tears in my eyes. And that brings me to retirement. Not ever thinking about retirement prior to my illness, I really never gave thought to what I would really enjoy doing when I retired. So here I am today, thinking what do I want to do with myself and start drawing up a bucket list. I just don't know where to begin. Any help out there? I do like to write (songs - children stories - TV comedies - poems etc.) I gave up my commercial acting (which I did a lot of and liked because I'm a ham) but had to stop that too because I'm also loosing my vision to AMD and can't dri...Expand for more
ve the freeways to LA, anymore where most of the casting calls are made. My 3 agents were sorry to see me go. However I want to wish you all Good health and the best things that life has to offer to all of you. As I recall we ALL were good guys and gals with respect for our parents and elders, and all those older than ourselves, empathizing with those less fortunate in Brooklyn in the 1940s and 1950s. We were poor hardworking kids, but we were good kids working our way through life and supporting our families. And here we are today, as gentle elderly people. WE are now the grandparents, great grandparents. WE did make it. So here's to all of us good guys and girls of the 40s and 50s, smile, look back at the upcoming kids and say " If you're really really lucky, maybe you too will get to be old and elderly and have your chance to look back and smile. As I've said above, I've always liked to write, songs ( one of which was recorded by the late BB King) - children stories - poems - TV comedies etc. So If there's any writers/producers in CA that may be reading this and can offer this old fart a gig, please don't hesitate to call. But hurry, before I die. AGAIN. Good HEALTHY future life and fortune to all! I love YA all and will ALWAYS remember where I came from, BROOKLYN, NY. Stan (Whitey Simon) Update - It's been seven months now and I'm feeling mush stronger since I last wrote. Happy 2017. Glad I made it this far. And oh yes, I finally married the beautiful lady I was living with for the last 14 years. Dying does make one think and do what one should have done 14 years ago. She is a terrific lady. Pam is truly my love and my life.
