Stanley's Story

After graduating from MHS, I went to the University of Maine, graduating in 1965 with a major in international affairs. I earned my Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University in 1965 and began working for the Central Intelligence Agency, including an interlude during which I served as an Intelligence Officer with the US Air Force. I then returned to the CIA, working as an intelligence analyst, serving as the intelligence community representative on the US Delegation to Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions in Vienna, Austria, and then as Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Europe. During these years, I also went back to school and completed everything but my dissertation for a PhD at American University (being sent to Vienna seemed more interesting than writing the dissertation). After leaving the CIA in 1975, I went to work for the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress. For 24 years, I served as a foreign and security policy specialist and research manager. I retired from CRS as a Senior Specialist in International Security P...Expand for more
olicy in 1999. Since retirement, I have continued to reseach, write and lecture about foreign and defense policy issues. I teach regularly at the NATO College in Rome, Italy and make frequent "public diplomacy" tours for the US Department of State. I have been named a Fulbright Senior Specialist Scholar and a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. Over the past several years, I have taught courses in Middlebury College's winter term and am a Visiting Scholar at Middlebury's Rohatyn Center for International Affairs. I have published dozens of journal articles, monographs, op ed articles and reports for Congress. My latest book is "NATO, the European Union and the Atlantic Community: The Transatlantic Bargain Challenged." My wife Monika and I live in Richmond, Vermont, travel frequently to Europe, spend much of our summer time at our family camp at Groton Pond, and try to get to Fenway Park at least once a year! I have a daughter (Virginia) by my first marriage, two step-children (Tony and Natalia), and Monika and I had a son (Scott) who died at the age of 16 in an accident in 1992.
