Timothy's Story
After Indy I goofed off at a couple of junior colleges, spent a bit of my parents money. In '93 I joined the Marine Reserves and served as an anti-aircraft missile radar tech in Hayward, CA for six years. It was the 90s and Clinton was the Prez and we didn't do a whole lot beyond grease jacks one weekend a month. After they decommissioned my unit they sent me across the bay to San Bruno where I got to wash trucks one weekend a month. At least I got to wear a cool uniform. Separated from the Corps in '99.
After the Marines I spent a couple of years being utterly useless. I had some crappy jobs, a couple pretty girlfriends and some super cool buddies. Then 9/11 happened. That really irritated me but what could a useless, over weight 28 year-old do about it? Get his act together, that's what.
In May of '02, after some careful consideration and several appointments with a personal trainer, I got back in the uniform. Air Force blue this time (28 is no age to join the Corps, unless you want to destroy your knees). I decided to use my head for thinking instead of using it to hang a helmet. Now I'm a communications system project manager at RAF Molesworth in the UK and I can't imagine a better job in the military. I get to manage the installation of some super cool communications systems to suppor...Expand for more
t our world-wide mission. I have a really nice chair at my office, too.
I've been to Kuwait twice, Kyrgyzstan (with a beer stop in Ireland), Afghanistan and a couple of TDY's in the states. I've had some good times (hiking in the mountains with pretty Russian girls), some really boring times (like there's anything fun in Kuwait) and some anxious times (that SOB Saddam shot SCUDs at me!). So far, so good.
Soon I'll wrap up my associates degree and get started on the bachelor degree. At that point I'll re-assess my situation and see if I can't find something worthwhile to do back in California. Maybe I'll find the cure to earthquakes or something nifty like that.
UPDATE SPRING 2010: In August 2009 I finally got reassigned out of Georgia and overseas to England. Of course, right after I got here they sent me to Afghanistan. What a crazy place that was. Six months over there felt like two years. I got to manage a few interesting projects, saw the President, saw Gary Sinese (I'm a CSI: NY fan), the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, and had several rockets fired at me. Yeah, nuts! Like my other deployments I made a lot of great friends. So, here I am in England hoping they leave me alone long enough to explore this great country. It's a great place for the outdoors, if you don't mind a little rain.
