Stephanie's Story

Although some people from high school have still stayed good friends through my "change" I understand that a good many of you consider me either a joke or some sort of religious abomination. That's okay; I forgive you. Small minds tend to think that way and it was small minds that triggered all those gay and lesbian teens to commit suicide. I know because I got pretty close to it myself "way back when". Does anyone remember that one person at Satellite (I can't even remember his name now) who was transgender and was open about it? He graduated about 1970 and all of the kids tortured him endlessly. I wanted to make friends with him so badly but I knew if I said a word I'd be in for the same treatment so I was a coward and kept my mouth shut. I didn't participate in the bullying but I also didn't reach out and tell him it was okay. I will always regret that. He was the real hero of our school. He survived ...Expand for more
being stuffed into garbage cans, beaten and bullied by the football team and he survived. I was the coward because I said and did nothing. I hope that if anyone here who hurt him reads this you will get down on your knees and beg forgiveness for what you did to that person because if there is a hell you belong in it. Me? I just acted as normal as I could. I had friends, good friends and no one knew the truth about me. I'll go to the reunion next year for the first time in 37 years and many of you will see me. Will you say hello or will you treat me like a freak? I can tell you that several of you that I reached out to slammed the door in my face after I told them who I was. Are you going to be that small minded and still be a bully? I guess we'll find out, won't we? Either way; you can't hurt me because I know who I am and I love who I am. Can you honestly say the same thing about yourself and your life?
