Stephanie's Story

After graduating from high school, I moved on to American River College, which I attended for two years toward completion of my AA. When I turned 21, I gave birth to my first daughter, Jessica. I worked at a few jobs before I tested for and became employed by the State of California at the Department of Motor Vehicles, where I worked for about 5 years. In 1983 I got married, had my second daughter, Tamsyn, and moved to Southern California, where I worked for about 8 years for another State agency. My marriage unraveled, and I continued living in Southern California as a single mom. Eventually, I left state service and decided to go back to school to learn computer programming, which I did finishing the top in my class. Soon I was working for a local opera company where I stayed for 5 years. Since then I've worked for several companies in a variety of industries. In 2000, my first granddaughter was born and 24 days later, my oldest brother was killed in a work-related accident, creating what would be a very roller coaster year. I've had a few relationships along the way, but after 14 years of singledom, I met and married my current husband, Mike. He and I are best friends and true companions. We share a lot of interests including karaoke, travel, Harleys, gardening, spor...Expand for more
ts, dogs, tortoises and family. I still enjoy reading and writing - maybe I'll write my novel yet! I sang for a time with a blues band and still enjoy singing live when I can. I am now a grandmother of two: Michelle, born in 2000, and Joshua, born in 2006. At my husband's request, I am now a Domestic Goddess. I travel when I can (in 2007 I made a 6-1/2 week road trip around the country with a girlfriend, passing through 32 states and the District of Columbia). I have approximately 50 rose bushes and trees in my yard in which I take much pride. I have great friends and family around me and I am loving life. We visit Sacramento two or three times a year, and who knows? Maybe someday I'll come back to stay. On April 1, 2009, my dad passed away after several years battling renal failure and dementia and undergoing dialysis. While our hearts are breaking from our loss, we know that our wonderful dad is no longer suffering. We will miss him immensely, but we will always have our wonderful memories of a dad who married our mom and took on seven children as his own before having one of his own. Every one of us loves him and cherishes him as our dad, our cheerleader and our hero. God bless you, Mario. You helped make us into the people we are. You will never be forgotten.
