Stephanie Welsh:

CLASS OF 1968
Van nuys, CA

Stephanie's Story

Life My sister, Sharon Welsh, was two years younger than me. She graduated in 1970. She had been exposed to Diethylstilbestrol (DES) when it was used to prevent miscarriages. This resulted in her passing away in her 30s of malenomia. She received the Lord in her last few days and she was happy and at peace when she passed. When I was at Van Nuys High (graduated 1968), I was very quiet and few knew who I was. Such is the situation of abused children. They take a backseat and no one knows they are there. I am a special education teacher (Algebra & Geometry) and I won't let my students be invisible like I was. I pay a great deal of attention to my students and create a safe and splendid environment. They even love coming to class, even if it is math. By the grace of God, my church, friends, and coworkers, I turned out just fine. I care for others the way I have been cared for by so many. School I had a crush on Seth Neumann because he had FRECKLES. My childhood sweetheart, Bill Bigelow, I was 5 and he was 8, (the boy next door) had FRECKLES. If you remember Seth and his freckles, you must admit he was pretty cute. College I muddled through my BS at CSUN without direction. I discovered I loved all majors and wanted to major in everything. (I wish I chose Math but I didn't want to be an egghead; strange thinking as Math was so easy for me.) I finally graduated after attending part-time for 10 years. I then started the training/credentialing process to help a handicapped young man recover from a serious handicapping accident. I now have my CLAD and still need my TESOL at UCLA extension and loving it. I'm thinking of a Masters in Mathematics Education. When I retire in 3 years I expect to work at an university in China teaching English. I will be there as part of a gospel team. Workplace Well, I started out as a clerk-typist for LAUSD. ded it was better to be credentialed. So I went back to college and started my bachelors. When I first started teaching, I wasn't very good at it. I was in tears before the Lord as I had to make a living and I knew if the students didn't learn to read, I would carry that throughout my life. So I wept and prayed with all my heart and the Lord honored my prayer. I've improved my teaching skills each year. I create a wonderful environment for my students, physically and emotionally. I teach Algebra & Geometry to special needs students. Since special ed students are sensitive to the types of graphic organizers that are on the wall, I don't put up anything that looks baby-ish. Rather I put up multi-cultural art which makes my room "cool." I put names on the board for positives: helping, catching a mistake, improvement, good attendance all week, etc. I am generous with positives & praise. Students like to hear their name recognized for their contributions. I make the first 2-3 weeks relaxed to "prime the pump" so to speak. Everything is full-credit as long as they come and participate the first few weeks. That helps to get them in the habit of coming and gives their grades a boost. I love my job and because I work with inner-city students, I feel I am contributing to the quality of my students' lives. Military My teaching "gang-membered" students in the inner-city is much like being in the military. We have a uniform policy so the students can't show their gang colors. We have to tuck-in constantly before they enter the room. But I don't get any combat pay and you would not believe how the students FIGHT to not tuck-in their shirts. I am in the Lord's army and I fight the battle each morning by praying as I drive to school. This prepares me for the surprises of the day, and each day does bring surprises. This time enables me to pray for each studeht and gives the Lord permission to work in that person's life. Amen!
