Stephanie's Story

Life Hi, there! I graduated from Ruskin in '73, one of the "split-shift" classes - the only one that had both morning and afternoon shifts! That was a treat! Right now I'm living in Olathe, KS with my husband, Rob, dog Retro (a rescue dog beagle mix), our daughter, Kaitlyn - in 8th grade and sometimes our son, Chris - he's a senior at Pittsburg State University majoring in music performance. He does come home once in awhile - when he gets hungry enough! I've worked for the same company for over 25 years as a computer programmer/analyst/ application developer/ whatever they want to call me this year. It's a good company. They've been good to me and I hope me to them in return. I work with some great people. Life has treated me well. I'm involved with church - sing in the choir - and spend most of my time away from work being a chaffeur to Kaitlyn. She's involved with soccer, saxophone lessons, orthodontist appts, you name it. She does it all and does it well. I have found there's advantages to having your kids almost 8 ears apart - I had a built-in babysitter for awhile, and they're not both in college at the same time! About the time Chris was able to start driving himself around, that was when I had to start running Kaitlyn around. Sometimes I wonder how families with multiple kids in multiple activities do it - even with two parents, let alone single parents! I've been married for close to 23 years, although I did have a short marriage before this one. I got married right out of jr. college, it lasted 2 years, then I was single for several years before marrying again - this one has stuck! I had my kids later in life so instead of having grandkids at 52, I'm still raising mine. Oh, well. I'm okay with that! Now my husband went gray prematurely, so he's the one that they all think is the kids grandpa when we go to school functions! We're looking down the tunnel at retirement, Lord willing, possibly before we...Expand for more
're 60. I'm enjoying the time I have now with the kids and my husband. College After high school graduation, I went to New Mexico Tech to start my college career (they gave me a work study scholarship). I wasn't ready for that! After flunking out almost all of my classes except for computer programming, I came back home and went to Longview - where I changed my major from chemistry to computer programming and buckled down and got it going. I do remember one class - Statistics - where we started out with about 35 kids in the class. The teacher was this masculine-looking lady who polled everyone in the class and asked them why they took the class. About half of them took it because there were no other electives they could take and they needed some hours. She proceeded to go through the first 3 or 4 chapters in one week. The next week, after at least a third of the class had dropped out, she looked around, said "I think we have a class now", and proceeded to start over. I always liked her! Anyway, I graduated from Longview in '76 and started working as a programmer. Many years later, when my son was in about 5th grade and my daughter was a toddler, I decided to go back to school and earn a full degree. I went to Baker University School of Professional and Graduate studies and earned my Bachelor of Science in Management. I remember tucking my son into bed one night and he looked up at me and told me he was proud of me for going back to school. That made it all worth it. I graduated from Baker in '98, twenty years after I graduated from Longview. I graduated in December - and of course, in Baldwin City and the Kansas City area, there was an ice storm that day. I remember my mom calling me saying that she and my stepdad wouldn't be able to make it since he was confined to a wheelchair. I cried. But then at the ceremony, I looked around and there they were - and I cried again! That's a memory I'll always have.
