Stephen Alder:

CLASS OF 1970
Staten island, NY

Stephen's Story

After the 15th anniversary, I was reflecting on 9/11, and I recalled that I lived in NYC only 3 years from 68 to 70, while my dad was stationed at Fort Wadsworth. But it was during that time that the World Trade Center towers were being built. I remember watching that with amazement. And I remember exactly what I was doing 31 years later when I heard that airplanes had crashed into those towers. Then of course the indescribable nightmare of the towers collapsing. I was living in LA, and it had a huge impact on me, and I watched it on TV. I can't imagine what it was like for someone living there to witness it. Some things I remember from attending New Dorp: A Spanish teacher who they picked to teach German, because she was German descent and knew some of the language. Also an art class where I didn't ...Expand for more
learn much, because the teacher said she couldn't teach me anything---apparently I was already too good. But I knew I wasn't good at art, because I had already taken a painting class, and my still life looked like flat blobs. A teacher shouldn't make those kind of assumptions. Just teach. Maybe they had staffing problems back then. Also, there was a creative writing publication the school did that contained some of my poems and stories. I finally found the name of it looking at the 1969 yearbook. It was called Spectrum, and the yearbook page even had my photo. I have long since lost my copy. It has taken me this long to want to revisit those morbid, self-absorbed poems, but it is part of my history. I don't know if anyone has an idea of how to obtain a copy of the 1969 Spectrum. Contact me if you do.
