Stephen's Story

Still living in the area and active with the Latham FD. Have been competing in the Firefighters Combat Challenge since 1993. Heading to Las Vegas in the Nov. for the World Championships in the Combat Challenge. This will be my 8th time, all since turning 50. Jan, my wife, went with me for the first time in 2007 and I actually made the finals in my age group. In 2007 the Challenge took us to New Zealand to compete at their 1st National Championships. We had a fire back in Dec/07 so we have now moved to Schenectady, not far from Union College. It seems funny after 56 years of living in the suburbs to now be living in the city. The wife's job went to Colorado w/o her a while back and mine is gone to Tennessee, also w/o me. But now it is time for a change. Guess I will have to put off getting that boat I wanted to retire to, but then that was only a little $250,000 thing we saw at the New England Boat Show. But it was a nice dream, spending winters in the warmer climes sailing from place to place. Well its now March 2013 and the new challenge season is coming soon. Last year I got my NYS record in the >60 division. It was not a great time but It did make me a state champion. Now I am ready to start working on my challenge bucket list. There are several FF's I want to run tandems and relays with, all leading up 2019. That is when I reach 50 yrs in the fire service and will hope to become the 1st individual competitor to compete with that much time in the fire service. My almost 44yrs might make me the competitor w/ the most time in service now. The 2013 season is ready to start for me with competition in Verona and Niagara Falls in June. Then possibly in Canada and Mass. in July, all leading up to WC XXII in Las Vegas in October. Looking to run a Beyond Classic Relay (6...Expand for more
0+) there. 6 nights at the Stratosphere. Well WC XXII has come and gone. The Beyond Classic Relay never came about, but I did run on a relay called International Cog's Classic Relay. It was made up of firefighters from the US, Canada. Germany and New Zealand. In the 1st round of elimination we ran into the world record holders. This team had the current gold medalist in the >50 and >55 divisions, plus the >50 bronze medalist. They ran 4 times at WC XXII and set a world record each time. Well I just made it thru my 1st week of retirement. But I have taken unpaid position as a chauffeur, driving my wife to work and than going to the fire house to hangout on most days.On my 1st day of retirement my 1st fire call was to the a Albany County Nursing Home. So the crew I was on got the joy of humping ourselves and 50-60# of equipment to the 5th floor via the stair. We get there just in time for command to call a signal. We came down on the elevator. Well, it is now 3 months down the road. In February I earned my Fire Service Instructor I certification. Planning to get more involved in training at the firehouse. Plans are set for a Challenge Tandem in Atlantic City in May with the chief of the City of St. Cloud, FL Fire/Rescue. Also getting things planned for WC XXIII in Phoenix this November. Well things went well at WC XXIII in Phoenix. I was part of 2 >60 Tandem Relays to compete and then I teamed up with a 60 and 69 y/o for a relay becoming the 1st >60 Relay to compete at a World Challenge event. They paired us against 3 young girls from Brampton, ON. We figured they were young enough to be our granddaughters. They totally kick us to the curb, but then they were all finalist as individuals. In September Jan and I will be heading to Monterey, CA for her 40th class reunion.
