Stephen's Story

Life This is obnoxious, like a holiday newsletter, but it's a quick way to let the curious know what I've been up to the last (gulp) 33 years. (Growing older, that's for sure.) After graduating from Cross Keys, I joined many of you at the University of Georgia. I roomed one semester with Evan Chipouris and dated Edie McLaurin still. Edie and I separated on a friendly basis and I hope she's doing well. I graduated with my degree in English in 1976 and then went to Duke University, doing my M.A. in English for a year. I was tired of school, so I went overseas through a program in the Southern Baptist convention called Journeyman. I taught English at a high school in Hong Kong from 1977-79, loved it there, and returned to teach at Hong Kong Baptist College from 1980-82. I attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary from 79-80 and then 82-85. I was interim pastor at a wonderful, small, inner-city church in Louisville, Kentucky and enjoyed learning about religion and social justice, church history, Greek and Hebrew, etc. While in Louisville, I met my wife, Jeanine. We were both ushering at Actor's Theatre. I left the ministry (though I have performed several weddings over the years) and returned to teaching college English. In order to get a better job, I went to graduate school, 1987-1992, at University of Wisconsin in Madison. We had two daughters while there. I finished my Ph.D. and got a job in the English Department at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in 1992. I've been there since. We had our thi...Expand for more
rd daughter in 1997. Our oldest is in her first year of college. My wife works at a small branch library and is working on her library science master's degree. We live in a historical neighborhood on the east side of Indianapolis and have many friendly neighbors. It's not an exciting city, but there's lots to do, the downtown has been revitalized, and like most places in the U.S., you can find people, places, and events that you like. I am a member of the local Green Party. It's difficult being in a third party, but the other two parties are so unresponsive to people's needs, so tied to corporate interests, and so full of themselves, that I see no good alternative at the moment. I know people shouldn't talk politics or religion--but hey, they are a crucial part of life, right? I teach writing and sometimes literature. I work with teachers of writing through the National Writing Project. Our website is: itwwp.iupui.edu It's a great program, and that's another passion of mine: education and educational reform. I seldom return to Atlanta, though my father and brother still live there (and run a small vending business, Foxie's). We usually meet somewhere else, such as Asheville, NC (where my sister lives), or a state park in Tennessee or Kentucky. But I was in Atlanta twice this year, once when my Dad was having bypass surgery and once when my mother died (in late October). The city has changed a lot, and so has Cross Keys and that neighborhood. I hope you all are finding inner peace, good relationships, truth and fulfillment. Shalom.
