Stephen's Story
First time trying this sort of thing.
Rutgers was my first stop. Typical undecided kid of the times, majored in Sociology not knowing what I really wanted to do. I loved Rutgers. I sang in the Glee Club with the famous and legendary "Soup" Walter. We did two European concert tours. I ran into Beth Rambo, ALJ class of '64, I think, at the Louvre on one of those tours.
I read a book "36 Children" by a guy named Kohl who taught school in New York. That inspired me! All I wanted to do was to teach elementary school in an urban area. I did that in Trenton, Junior High School #3. After a very short time, I became uninspired! Left that and got a job with the Boy Scouts of America in Elizabeth N.J. as a District Executive. Did that for a year. I loved working with kids, but not the rest... money raising.
I left that and got a job as a Customs Inspector in Newark New Jersey. I figured I would take a government job until something better came along. ...Expand for more
Well, I have been doing this for almost 40 years. Now I am the Port Director of Customs and Border Protection in Bermuda. I have been here for five years, and my tour of duty ends in about a month. If anyone told me, or you, that Steve Greenberg would be working for the government, carrying a gun in 1965, I would have thought them crazy!
At any rate, it has been very exciting as a career, and I will be moving on to Orlando in December and the adventure continues.
But the most important event in life has been meeting my girlfriend in Kirkpatrick Chapel Choir at Rutgers in the 60's, Helen Damato, from Union NJ. We have been married for 41 years, and it is exciting every day. Our children are wonderful. Daniel, an academic studying Chinese Art History at Yale is our oldest. Julie is an artist living in Raleigh North Carolina having graduated from Ohio State with her Masters in Fine Art.
I remember ALJ fondly, Miss Middy, Bill Blakely and all of you.
